SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 438,280, dated October 14, 1890.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, BENJAMIN B. WRIGHT,

a citizen of the United States, residing at Evansville, in the county of Vanderburg and State of Indiana, have invented a new and useful Bracket or Shelf, of which the following is a specification.

This invention has relation to brackets or shelves, and among the main objects in View IO are to provide a removable bracket so constructed as to be capable of being easily and cheaply cast, which will consist of as few parts as possible, and when assembled will be rigid and strong.

[5 Other objects and advantages of the invention will hereinafter appear, and the novel features will be particularly pointed out in the claims.

Figure 1 is a perspective View of a bracket constructed in accordance with my invention, the parts being assembled. Fig. 2 is a detail in side elevation of the brace or support; Fig. 3, a plan of the shelf; Fig. 4, a detailed perspective of one of the supporting-brackets.

1 represents the wall or other support, to

which, through the medium of screws 2, are applied bracket-supports 3. These supports consist of a base-plate 4, at the opposite sides of which are formed inwardly-projecting L- shaped lugs 5. Ordinarily two of these brackets are employed, they being arranged in a vertical line with each other.

6 represents the usual brace-frame, the upper and rear edges of which are provided with a lateral flange 7, projecting at each side of 40 the brace, the upper flange being formed at about the center with a depression 8, in the center of which there projects upwardly and above the surface of the flange at-ransverselyarranged lug or key 9. At one side of the depression 8 there is formed in the brace and below the flange an opening 10. At the intersection or angle of the flange there is provided an angular recess or shoulder 11, and at intervals and at opposite edges throughout the vertical length of said flange there are formed screw-receiving slots 12.

13 represents the shelf-section, and it, like other remaining portions of the bracket, is preferably formed of cast metal, and is provided at its center with a countersunk recess -14, having a transverse slot 15 of such a size as to admit of the introduction of the lug 9, formed on the brace. A circular flange 25 depends from around the slot 15 and fits in the depression 8. At the rear edges of the shelf are formed rearwardly-projecting lugs 16, which, when the shelf is in position, bear against the wall or other support and serve to brace the same. To the right and left ofa line drawn transversely through the center of 6 5 the shelf there are formed near each side and upon the under surface thereof inwardlydisposed binding-lugs 17.

To mount the shelf upon the brace, the two are put in line with each other and the lug 9 introduced into the countersunk recess of the shelf. Now, by turning the shelf to a position at right angles to its original position, the ends of the lug rest upon the edges of the slotted countersunk recess, and the opposite lugs 17 take under the transverse flange formed upon the upper edge of the brace. When in this position a longitudinal head 18, formed upon the rear edge of the shelf, takes into the shoulder or recess formed in the meeting angle of the flange of the brace. It now simply remains to introduce the lower end of the flange of the brace within the lugs of the upper bracket and lower the bracket until the lugs of the second supporting-bracket receive said flange.

Additional rigidity may be given the structure by inserting screws in the screw-slots mentioned.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim is- 1. In a bracket, a brace provided with a countersunk recess in its upper edge and with an up wardly-disposed lug or key, in combination with a shelf having a central coun- 5 tersunk recess provided with a slot adapted to receive the lug or key and disposed in a direction opposite to the same, substantially as specified.

2. In a bracket, a brace having as'urround- 10o ing flange and a central depression at its up per end provided with a key, in combination with a shelf having the central countersunk recess adapted for receiving the key and provided with oppositely-disposed depending binding-lugs adapted to take under the flange of the bracket, substantially as specified.

3. The bracket-supports 4, having the opposite lugs 5, in combination with the brace 6, having the flange 7 entering said support and provided in its upper end with the transversely-arranged lug or key 9, and the shelf 13, having a countersunk recess 14, transversely slotted, as at 15, to receive the key, and the inwardly-disposed binding-lugs 17, adapted to take under the flange at each side of the recess, substantially as specified.

4. In a bracket, the brace-frame 6, provided with a recess 8, and a lug or key 9, extending upward from the recess, combined With the shelf having the slot 15, to receive the lug or key 9, and the flange 25, to fit in the depression 8, as set forth.

5. In a bracket, the brace-frame 6, provided with a recess 8, and alug or key 9, extending upward from the recess, combined with the shelf having the slot 15, to receive the-lug or key 9, and the flange 25, to fit in the depression 8, the lateral flange 7 on the brace-frame, and the oppositely-disposed lugs 17 on the shelf, to engage the flange 7, as set forth.

6. The shelf 13,having the depending flange 18 along its rear edge and provided with a slot 15 at right angles to said flange, in combination with the brace-frame 6, having the recess 11 engaged by said flange, and the lug or key 9 on said frame parallel with said recess, the whole adapted for use substantially as described.
