WINDOW-SASH LOCK.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Nov. i2, i912.
Application led. February 24, 1912. Serial No. 679,661.
To all 'whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, NATHANIEL KAHN, a citizen of the UnitedStates, and residing at New York, in the county of New York and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Window-Sash Locks, of which the following is a specification, such as will enable those skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to window sash locks, and the object thereof is to provide an improved device of this class which is independent of the sash or window frame, but which may be quickly and easily applied so as to lock both sashes in a closed position whenever desired.
The invention is fully disclosed in the following specification of which the accompanying drawing forms a part in which the separate parts of my invention are designated by suitable reference characters` in each of the views, and in which Figure l is a perspective view showing part of-a window frame and part of both sashes, and showing my improved sash lock applied and ;-Fig. 2 a section on the line 2 2 of Fig. 1.
In the drawing forming part of this specification I have shown at a a part of one side of a window frame, and I have also shown at Z9 a part of the upper sash, and at c a part of the lower sash, and the frame a is provided with the usual beads or strips d and e between which the lower sash is mounted, the outer bead or strip (l also serving as one of the guides for the upper sash.
My improved sash lock comprises a back plate f and a front plate g slidably mounted one upon the other, and the back plate f is provided at its top and bottom edges with longitudinal keepers f1 in which the front plate g is longitudinally movable. The front plate g is provided at its outer end with a right angled member g2 having sharp pointed teeth g3 on its outer surface, and the back plat-e f is provided at its front end with a similar right angled member f2 having sharp pointed teeth f3 on its inner surface. The front plate g is also provided in its inner end portion with a longitudinal slot g4, and passed through the back plate f and through the slot g4 is a screw or bolt L, and mounted on said bolt in front of the plate g is an arm i which ranges forwardly 1 and longitudinally of said plate g, and through which is passed a threaded screw or bolt j which also passes through a curved slot g5 in the plate g, and the screw or bolt y' 1s provided with a thumb nut la, and mounted on said screw or bolt, between the plate g and the arm 2', is a lever m which is pivoted to the plate g at m2 and which ranges crosswise of said plate and the slot g5, and is provided with a handle portion m3, and the slot g5 is concentric to the pivoted point of the lever m.
The screw or bolt h is preferably provided with two washers n and n2, as shown, and it will be observed that the front plate g is longer than the back plate j, and is provided with a projecting end portion gG in which the slot g5 is formed, and on which the lever m is mounted, and the operation will be readily understood from the foregoing description, when taken in connection with the accompanying drawing, and the following statement thereof.
In order to apply this device the sashes are closed, as shown in F ig. l, and the lock is placed in position ov'er the bottom sash, as is also shown, with the right angled member g2 of the plate g between one side of the top sash and the adjacent bead or strip CZ, and the right angled member )"2 of the plate f fitting against the inner side of the bead or strip e, and with the parts adjusted to this position the lever m is moved in the direction of the arrow ze. This movement of said lever forces the plate f forwardly, and the plate g backwardly, and forces the teeth f3 into the bead or strip e and the teeth g3 into the side of the top sash, and the sash lock is securely held in position, and the sashes b and c are locked against movement. It will be understood that in order to manipulate the lever m the nut 7c must be loosened and when said lever is in operative position, as above described the nut /c must be tightened; it will also be understood that in order to adjust the plates g and f into the desired position for use, t-he nut 7c must also be loosened.
My improved sash lock may be made of any desired dimensions, and by reason of the possible adjustment of the plates f and g as above described the said sash lock may be applied to windows, or window sashes of varying transverse dimensions; and changes in and modifications of the construction herein described, may be made, within the scope of the appended claim, Without departing from the spirit of myinvention or sacrificing its advantages.
Having fully described my invention what I claim as neiv and desire to secure by Letters Patent is A sash look comprising a back plate and a front 'plate movable longitudinally thereon, said plates being provided attheir corresponding outer ends with right angled members which project in the same diretion, and one of which is provided on its outer and the other on its inner surface with teeth, the front plate being also providedwith a central longitudinal slot and in the inner end portion thereof with a curved slot,'a lever pivoted to the front end portion ofthe front plateand ranging transversely of the curved slot, and a bolt passed through said curved slot and through said lever and through the free end of said arm.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my invention I have signed my name in presence of the subscribing Witnesses this 23rd day of February, 1912.
Y NATHANIEL KAHN.
