Specification of Letters Patent. Patented NOV. 27, 19117..
Application filed December 17, 1915. Serial No. 67,427.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that we, EDGAR M. WINFREY and JOHN J. PIKE, citizens of the United States, residing at l.Wichita Falls, in the county of `Wichita and State of Texashave invented certain new and useful Improvements in Door-Checks,of `which thefollowing is a specification.
Our invention relates to door checks, and is designed with the primary object of providing a new and novel construction of door check which is adapted to hold the door in any desired position to which it may be moved; and in order to prevent the slamming or sudden closing of the door.
A further object of this invention is to provide a device of this class, which will be simple, and economical in construction and strong, durable and efficient in operation.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists of the construction and combination of parts as hereinafter described and pointed out in the appended claims.
In the accompanying drawings;
Figure 1 is a view in elevation showing the device applied to a portion of a door frame and door.
Fig'. 2 is a top plan view of the same.
Fig. 3 is a vertical sectional view on the line 3 3 of Fig. 2.
In the accompanying drawings, 1 is a portion of a door| frame and 2 is a portion of a door associated therewith. To the door frame 1 is secured a clamping member 3 adapted to pivotally support an arm or link 4:, which is secured at its inner end to an angle plate 5 carried by the door 2.
The clamping member 3 is secured to the door frame 1 by screws 3a or other suitable means passing through the lugs 3b and a portion later to be referred to. Pivotally carried by the clamping member 3 is a stud 6 having serrations 7 adapted to engage a brake means 8, which may consist of a leather band disposed between the studs 6 and the clamping member 3. The stud 6 is provided with a square projection 9 the purpose of which will be hereinafter described. The brake means 8 has an aperture 10 through which a clamping bolt 11 passes and has a head 12 disposed between an outwardly bent portion 13 of the clamping member 3 and thedoor frame. The winged nut 14, carried by the outer end of the 'clampJ ing bolt 11 is adapted to bear against an end 15 of the clamping member 3.
The square projection or head 9 of the stud Gis adapted to fit an aperturel in the arm or link 4, whereby the stud 6 may be rotated when the door 2 is swung. The outer end of the arm 4 is adapted by means of a screw 17, to engage the member 5 carried by the door.
The angle plate 5 is secured to the door by means of screws or other suitable means 5', and has a horizontal fiange 18 in which is provided an elongated slot 19 designed to receive the screw 17 on the arm 4L.
Then the door 2 is opened it will be seen that the edge 2O at the slot 19 will engage the screw 17 causing it to ride toward the opposite end of the slot and at the same time causing the arm i to swing in the direction in which the door is swung. hen the desired position is reached the clamping nut 11 (which is previously loosened) is tightened until the pressure exerted by the clamping member 3 on the brake means 8 is sufficient to cause the brake means 8 to frictionally engage the stud 6 and to lock the same against movement. It will be readily seen that the degree of friction by which the element S engages the stud 6 may also be varied so as to allow the door to swing, but at the same time will prevent sudden closing or slamming thereof, or in other words will brake the swinging movement of the door.
It is understood that we do not limit ourselves to the exact construction described herein but reserve the right to make such changes and alterations as do not depart from the spirit and scope of the appended claims.
What is claimed is tl. A door check, comprising a clamping member of substantially U shape, means for securing the same to a door frame, an arm, means for connecting one end of the arm with a door, a stud carried by the other end of said arm pivotally mounted in the bend of the clamping member, a flexible yielding member between the stud and the clamping member and means for adjusting the clamping action of the clamping member on the yielding member, said means consisting of a thumb screw passing through both ends of the clamping member and one. end of the flexible member.
9. .Au door check, comprising an arm,
means for connecting one end thereof to a door, a serrated stud on the other end of the arm, a clamping member embracing the stud, means for securing said member to the door frame and a flexible brake member of yielding material interposed between the stnd and the clamping member.
3. A door cheek including in combination with a door and a door frame, a strip of metal bent to assume a substantially U- shaped Configuration, a bracket carried by the door having a longitudinally extending Slot7 a*` connecting arm, means on one end of thearm for slidably engaging the slot of the bracket, Ya serrated stud lupon the opposite enolof` the pivotally mounted in the bend of the clamping member, a flexible Copies of this patent may be obtained for yielding brake member interposed between the stud and the clamping member, and a clamping bolt connecting the terminals of the U-sliaped clamping member, whereby said clamping member may be adjusted to vary the degree of friction between the serrated stud and the yielding brake member in a manner to control the swinging movement of the door. v
In testimony whereof we aHX our signatures in presence of two witnesses.
