Letters Patent No. 104,255, dated .Time/14, 1870.
f IMPROVED PORTABLE WRITING-DESK.
The Schedule referred to in these Letters Patent and making part ol the saine.
which will enable others skilled in the art to make and l 'use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawing forming part of this speciiication, in which- Figure 1 is aftop view of my improved writing-desk, opened.
Figure2 is'a detail vertical sect-ion of the same,
taken through the line'x x, fig. I, the aps being partially raised.
Figure 3 is a detail view showing 'the present manner of hinging the flaps,
Similar letters of reference indicate corresponding parts.
My invention has for its object to improve the construction of portable writing-desks, so as to make them stronger, more durable, and less liable to get ont of order; and
It consists in the construction of various parts of the desk, as hereinafter more fully described.
A is the upper part;
B is the lower part;
C is the till; and,4
D, are the flaps.
lAs heretofore constructed, the flaps D were hinged to the sides a' bf ot' the parts A B, ofthe desk by the velvet or other material E, with which the said flaps were covered. With this construction the covering E was constantly becoming loose, so that the flaps would not work properly. When-thusconstructed,
the aps D had to be supported by strips attached to the said sides 'ct' b', as shown in fig. 3. Y
In my improved writing-desk I hinge the flaps D directly to each other, and to the parts A B of the desk by the metal hinges F;
To enable-this to be done, I bevel ott the lower corners of the adjacent edges of the Haps D, so that their upper edges'may come close together, as shown in iig. 2.
I also cut out and -bevel oi' the inner corners ofthe edges of the sides a' b' of the-parts A B ot' the desk, to tit upon the beveled edges of the a'ps D, and at the same'tme to support the said flaps, as shown in The hinges F are made double, being made similar to two hinges connected together by a single pivoting pin, as shown intig. 1.V This construction of the hinges allows the two flaps D and the two parts A B of the desk to moi'e together when opening and closing the desk, and at theV same time enables the flaps D to be opened and closed independently of each other, and of the parts A B of the desk, as shown in g. 2.
By this construction, vneater, stronger, and more durable desks are produced, and which willbe less liable to get out of 'repair than the'desks constructed in the ordinary manner.
. Having thus described myinvention,
' I claim as newand desire to secure byLettersPatentf The im proved desk, consisting of the parts A and B, beveled on the edges Vof the sides b', and the flaps D D having their adjacent edges similarly beveled,-` sad parts being connected by the double hinges F, as shown and described.
The above specicatiou ot'4 my invention signed by me this 4th day of May, 1870.
