Wm 5M ESTHER FLORETTA AITMAN, OF ST. PETERSBURG, PENNSYLVANIA.
SHARPENING DEVICE.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 6, 1912.
Application filed April 9, 1912. Serial No. 689,540.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, Es'rnnn F. ALTMAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Petersburg, in the county of Clarion and State of Pennsylvania, have invented new and useful Improvements in Sharpening Devices, of which the following is a speciication.
This invention relates to sharpening devices.
In carrying out my invention it is my purpose to provide a sharpening element with a suitable handle with a moisture retaining face or member, whereby moisture may be imparted to the implement being sharpened and thence to the sharpening element.
With the above object and others of a similar nature in view, which will hereinafter be more fully set forth, the invention resides in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawings, Figure l is a perspective view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention. Fig. 2 is a sectional longitudinal view of the same. Fig. 3 is a detail view illustrating the device within a container.
Referring now to the drawing in detail the numeral l designates the central member or core of my improved Sharpener. This member is preferably constructed of wood and comprises what may be termed a body portion having an extension forming a handle 2. The body portion has one of its faces provided with a sharpening element, such as a stone 3, the said element being secured to the body in any desired or preferred manner, such as the employment of glue or similar adhesive materials. The opposite face of the body is provided with a coating of fabric or other porous, soft material, the same being adapted to absorb a sufficient quantity of moisture which may be expelled therefrom as the said moistened surface is drawn over the implement to be operated upon by the sharpening element.
The device is adapted to be carried, when not in use, in a casing containing a suicient amount of water or other fluid, as illustrated in Fig. 3 of the drawing, the Said casing being provided with a suitable top or closer which is flanged to prevent the escape or evaporation of the liquid contained within the said casing.
Having thus described the invention what I claim is In a device for the purpose set forth, a flattened core provided with a handle, the said core having one of its faces rovided with a sharpening stone which 1s glued thereon, the opposite face of the core being provided with a soft fabric surface of an absorbent nature and which is adapted to retain a quantity of water, and the core adapted to serve as a partition for preventing the liquid from contacting with the sharpening stone, or interfering with the connection of the stone to the core.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ESTHER FLORETTA ALTMAN.
