Surcouf/134 ANDREW WEIGAND, OF MALVERN, OHIO.
PIPE-WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented July 3o, 1912.
Application filed March 29, 1912. Serial No. 687,212.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, ANDREW WEIGAND, a citizen of the United States, residing at Malvern, in the county of Carroll and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pipe-Vrenches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention has relation more specifically to that class of pipe wrenches in which an L-shaped jaw is pivoted to a lever or handle.
The objects of my invention are rst to provide a pipe wrench whereby adjustments can be made for different sized pipes and second, to provide for the gripping of small sized pipes by so arranging the parts that they may be adjusted with reference to each other to produce what might be termed an alligator wrench.
In the accompanying drawings: Figure l is a side elevation. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the L-shaped pivoted jaw in different adjustment. Fig. 3 is a view showing a portion of the handle or shank and illustrating the L-shaped jaw reversed from the position shown in Figs. l and 2. Fig. 4 is a detached view of the L-shaped jaw, the connecting bolt and a portion of the handle or shank. Fig. 5 is a view showing a portion of the handle or shank and illustrating the position of the L-shaped jaw reversed from the position shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and in different adjustment from that shown in Fig. 3.
Similar numerals of reference indicate corresponding parts in all the ligures of the drawings.
In the accompanying drawing, 1 represents the handle or shank which is formed of any desired length. The grip or jaw end of the handle or shank 1 is provided With a series of-teeth 2 which are arranged upon the inner face of the handle or jaw l. The handle or jaw l is also provided with the elongated slot 3, which elongated slot is located at an angle to the line of teeth formed upon the inner face of the handle l. One side of the elongated slot is provided with a series of recesses spaced from each other by the intervening projections 4. said recesses being for the purpose of temporarily holding the L-shaped jaw 5 by means of the bolt 6. The shank of said boltbeing formed of such a size that it can be moved back and forth in the elongated slot 3 and seated in any desired recess separated by the intervening projections t. The L- shaped jaw is made up of links 7 and the jaw 5 said link portions being for the purpose of providing means for pivotally connecting the same to the jaw end of the handle or shank l. In some instances it is desirable to locate the pivoted jaw as shown in Figs. 1 and 2 and in other instances it is desirable to locate said pivotal jaw as illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5. In Figs. 2 and 3 the pivoted aw 5 is shown in dierent positions but in each instance is in such a posit-ion that the toothed faces or grip portions of the handle or jaw are located at an 'angle to each other, thereby producing what might be termed an alligator wrench, while in Fig. l the pivoted jaw is shown in position to bring the grip faces of the jaw and handle into substantially parallel relations. It will be understood that by the various adjustments of the pivoted jaw two specific classes of wrenches are combined that is to say, a grab wrench'is provided and the ordinary open aw wrench, the grab feature being illustrated in Figs. 3 and 5 and the opposite shown in Figs. 1 and 2.
It will be understood that no mechanical change of any of the parts, to produce the two specic kinds or styles of wrenches, is necessary.
Having fully described myinvention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is
The combination of a handle provided with a toothed jaw portion and an elongated slot located at an angle to the toothed portion of the handle, one side of the slot provided with projections and recesses located between the projections, an L-shaped jaw provided with teeth and said L-shaped jaw adapted for adjustment and reversal, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony that I claim the above,` I have hereunto subscribed my name in the presence of two witnesses.
ANDREW VVEIGAND.
