PATENT FFICE.
JOHN MYERS, OF CULMERSVILLE, PENNSYLVANIA, ASSIGNOR OF ONE- HALF TO ANTON HARTIG, OF TARENTUM, PENNSYLVANIA.
WRENCH.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 746,643, dated December 8, 1903.
I Application filed March 17, 1,903. Serial No. 148,189. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JOHN T. MYERS, a citizen' of the United States of America, residing at Oulmersville, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wrenches, of which the following is a speci fication, reference. being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, and has for its primary object to construct a wrench which may be advantageously used either as the ordinary monkey wrench or as a pipewrench and which may be rapidly and easily adjusted, so as to fit various-sized nuts and burs.
A further object of the present invention is to construct a wrench in which a greater leverage is provided as the wrench is adjusted to fit the various-sized burs.
A still further object is to provide novel means for the rapid adjustment of the jaw and for the secure holding of the same in the adjusted position.
Briefly described, the invention comprises a wrench-shank provided with teeth on two of its opposite faces, which teeth are adapted to engage with op positely-disposed teeth in the handle of the wrench. The Wrench-shank is provided at its outer-end with a rigid jaw, the said shank telescoping into the handle and being preferably backed by a spring interposed between the end of the shank and the end of the recess in the handle. The handle proper is capable of rotation on the shank and is connected to the inner jaw of the wrench, the said handle carrying a springpressed pawl normally engaging in the pocket provided therefor in the inner jaw of the.
wrench, whereby the handle is held in the locked position. The outer jaw is preferably constructed with a toothed surface at one side of the wrench-shank,and the inner jawcarries the toothed dog, whereby the wrench may be advantageously used as a pipe-wrench, while that portion of the jaws extending to the opposite side of the wrench-shank may be advantageously used for nuts and burs.
In describing the invention in detail reference is had to the accompanying drawings,
forming a part of this specification, and wherein like numerals of reference indicate like parts throughout the severalriews, in which-- Figure 1 is a detail side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is arear elevation of the same. Fig. 3 is a central vertical sectional view. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View on the line 3 3 of Fig. 3.
To put my invention into practice, I provide a wrench-shank 1, which is substantially rectangular in cross-section and provided on two opposite faces with teeth 2. Atits outer end this wrench-shank carries a jaw 3, the arm or extension4E of which is adapted to coact with the arm or extension 5 of the inner jaw 6, and the arm or extension 7 of the jaw 3 is adapted to coact with the toothed dog 8, which is pivotally mounted in the inner jaw 6. The arm or extension 7 of the jaw 3 has a toothed surface 9, which is preferably made with the two side faces at an angle to each other whereby to receive a pipe therein. The pipe, which will be held, will be gripped at two points by toothed surfaces 9 and at the same time on the opposite side of the pipe by the teeth of the dog 8. This dog 8 is pressed by a spring 8 and is pivoted in the pocket or recess formed between two lugs 10, cast integral with the jaw 6, and back of thispocket or recess is another pocket or recess 11 to receive the outer end of the pawl or catch 12, pivoted between a pair of lugs 14:, carried by the handle 15. The pawl 12 is normally held in engagement with the pocket or recess 11 by means of the spring 16. The handle member 15 is made hollow to receive the wrench-shank therein, and this handle member is'provided on two opposite faces of its. bore with teeth 17, which are adapted to engage with the teeth 2 on the wrench-shank when the handle memher is in a certain position, and when given a one-quarter turn the teeth on the handle member are moved out of mesh with the teeth on the wrench-shank and the latter is free to be adjusted. The wrench-shank is preferably under the tension of a spring 18, which may be inserted into the handle through the opening in the rear of the handle and afterward closed by means of the screw plug or nut 19, or the spring may be inserted in the recess through the other end of the handle prior to placing the wrench-shank therein. The handle member, at its outer end, is connected to the inner jaw 6, this being accomplished by means of a tongue 20, carried by the jaw 6 and engaging inlthe groove 21, formed in the periphery of the handle member, near its upper end, the lugs 14 forming stops to limit the rotary movement of the handle member in each direction.
It is to be noted that when the handle member is given a one-quarter turn the teeth 17 will be disengaged from the teeth 2, and the wrench-shank and outer jaw are then free to be moved away from the inner jaw 6 or toward the same, as desired, and when the handle-member is given a one-quarter turn in the opposite direction the teeth will be again engaged and the jaws may be held in the adjusted position.
It will be obvious that various changes may be made in the details of construction without departing from the general spirit of my invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. In combination with the handle provided in its lower end with a plug, said handle being hollow and having the upper portion of its interior provided with teeth, a shank slidably mounted in said handle and being provided with teeth meshing with the teeth thereof, the teeth of said handle and shank being so arranged as to be disengaged when the handle is given a partial turn, a spring interposed between the said shank and plug, and a movable jaw operatively connected to the said handle, and means for locking the said handle to the said movable jaw.
2. The combination with the shank provided at its outer end with a fixed jaw, of a handle provided with teeth engaging teeth formed on the shank, said handle being provided adjacent its upper edge with a peripheral groove, a movable jaw provided with a tongue engaging the groove of the said handle, a dog carried by the said movable jaw, a spring-pressed pawl carried by the handle, and being normally received in a seat formed in the movable jaw, and a spring arranged in the said handle and engaging the said shank, substantially as and for the purpose specified.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
JOHN T. MYERS.
