Description
JACOB F. ROEHM, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI, ASSIGNOR- OF ONE-HALF TO W. B. ROEHM, OF KANSAS CITY, MISSOURI.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed November 2, 190B.
Patented July 6, 1909.
Serial No. 460,681.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that 1, Jason F. Ronnie, a citizen of the United States, residing at Kansas City, in the county of Jackson and State of Missouri, have invented certain. new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to improvements in wrenches.
It relates particularly to improvements in monkey wrenches.
The object of my invention is to provide a monkey wrench which is cheap to manufacture, is strong and durable, which permits ready adjustment on the shank of the movable jaw and in which the movable jaw will be rigidly held in the position to which it is adjusted.
The novel features of my invention are hereinafter more fully described and set forth in the claims.
In the accom 'ianying drawings illustrating my invention Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. .2 is an elevation. view of another side of the wrench. Fig. 3 is a longitudinal. sectional view taken on the dotted line ab of Fig. 2. Fig. 4.- is a longitudinal sectional View taken on the dotted line c-d of Fig. 3. Fig. 5 is an end view of the wrench.
Similar characters of referencedenotesimilar parts.
1 denotes the shank which is provided at one end with the usual fixed aw 2, and. at the other end with an enlarged handle por tion 3, preferably an integral portion of the shank. The handle portion 33 of the shank 1 is provided at one side with a longitudinal grooved portion 1, opposite sides of which are provided with longitudinal lateral recesses 5. The handle portion 3 is provided at the bottom of the grooved portion 4, with a longitudinal series of transverse teeth 6, preferably of ratchet form which are adapted to be engaged by similar transverse teeth 7, provided on the inner edge of a holding member comprising preferably a bar 8 which at one end is pivoted by means of a transverse pin 9 to a movable jaw 10, of the ordinary type, which encircles and is slidably mounted on the shank 1, between the fixed jaw 2 and the handle portion 3.
The holding member 8 is adapted to be swung in the grooved portion 4 to and from the position shown in Fig. 3, in which the teeth. '7 will engage the teeth 6 and prevent lengt-l'iwise movement of the member 8 and jaw 10. Releasable means are provided for retaining the holding member 8 in locked engagement with. the teeth This locking means comprises preferably the following described mechanism 'Hotatively mounted in a transverse hole provided. therefor in the holding member 8, is a turn button or locking member 11, wltiich at its inner end is provided. with. two oppositcly disposed lateral projections 12 adapted to enter the recesses 5 respectively when the member 8 is in the position shown in 3, and retain said l'rolding member in position engaging the teeth. 6.
Secured to the outer end of the locking member 11 is a plate 13 which serves as a finger hold by which. the locking member 11 may be turned.
To adjust the movable jaw 10 the locking member 11 is turned to the position shown in dotted lines in Fig. 4t, in which position the projections 12 will be removed from the recesses 5 thus permitting the holding member 8 to be swung outwardly and disengaged from the teeth 6. The aw 10 may then he slid lengthwise to the desired position on the shank 1, after which the holding member 8 is swung inwardly so as to have its teeth 7 engage the teeth 6. The locking member 11. is then rotated by means of the plate 13 to a position in which the projections 12 will enter the recesses 5, as shown in Fig. 4, thereby preventing outward swinging of the holding member 8 and retaining said member in locked engagement with the shank.
Various modifications of my invention, within the scope of the appended claims, may be made without departing from its spirit.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim and desire to secure by Letters Patent is l. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw and a longitudinal series of teeth and provided with a longitudinal groove having a lateral. recess at one side, a jaw movable on the shank toward and from the fixed jaw, a holding member pivoted to the movable jaw so as to swing into and out of engagement with the teeth of the shank, and a locking member carried by said holding member and movable lengthwise in said groove and movable on said holding n1ember to and from a position in which it will enter said recess and retain the holding member in locked engagement with said teeth.
2. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed aw and a longitudinal groove having at one side a recess, a jaw movable on said shank toward and from said fixed jaw, a holding member pivoted to said movable j aw and having means by which, when swung to a certain position, it will lockingl r engage said shank, and a locking member carried by said holding member and movable thereon to and from a position in which it will lie in said recess and retain the holding member in locked engagement with said shank.
3. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw and a longitudinal groove provided on its bottom with a series of transverse teeth and provided at one side with a lateral recess, a jaw movable on said shank toward and from the fixed jaw, a holding member pivoted to said movable jaw and movable thereon into and out of engagement with said teeth, and a locking member pivoted to said holding member and rotative thereon into and out of said recess and when in said recess retaining the locking member engaged with said teeth.
4. A wrench comprising a shank having a fixed jaw and a longitudinal grooved portion provided with a series of transverse teeth, said grooved portion having a lateral recess,
a jaw movable on said shank toward and from said fixed jaw, a holding member piv oted to said movable aw so as to swing into and out of engagement with said teeth, and a turn button rotative on said holding member and movable therewith into and out of said groove and provided with a lateral projection adapted to enter said recess when the holding member is engaged with said teeth for retaining the holding member releasably locked to said shank.
5. A wrench comprising a shank having a 'l'xed jaw and a longitudinal grooved portion provided at opposite sides with lateral 1'e cesses and on its bottom with a longitudinal series of teeth, a jaw movable on the shank toward and from the fixed jaw, a holding member pivoted to the movable aw so as to swing into and out of engagement with said teeth, and a locking member provided with two lateral projections and rotative on. said holding member to and from a position in which said projections will lie in said recesses respectively, and retain the holding member engaged with said teeth.
In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in presence of two subscribing witnesses.
JACOB F. ROEHM. Witnesses:
E. B. HoUsE, J. W. FLETCHER.
