CARD AND TAG HOLDER FOR CAR-S.

To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, PHILIP S. I'IAMILTON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at Pittsburgh, in the county of Allegheny and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Card and Tag Holders for Cars, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to card and tag holders for cars, and the primary object of my invention is to provide a holder that can be advantageously used in connection with steel cars where it is practically impossible to use tacks or a similar fastening means for temporarily attaching a card, tag or other article of card board or paper to the side of the car.

Another object of this invention is to provide a card frame with positive and reliable means, in a manner as will be hereinafter set forth, for temporarily holding the card without injury to the same.

A further object of this invention is to accomplish the above results by a mechani cal construction that is, simple, durable, easy to install and highly efiicient for the purpose for which it is intended.

Vith these and such other objects in view as may hereinafter appear, the invention re- I sides in the novel construction, combination and arrangement of parts, to be hereinafter specifically described and then claimed.

Reference will now be had to the drawing, wherein:

Figure 1 is a front elevation of the card holder as applied to a car. 2 is the enlarged front elevation of a detached card holder. Fig. 3 is a rear elevation of the same. Fig. 1 is a vertical sectional view of the holder taken on the line 4r4: of Fig. 2. and Fig. 5 is a horizontal sectional view of the same taken on the line 55 of Fig. 2.

A card holder in accordance with this in vention comprises a rectangular frame 1 adapted to be secured to the side wall 6 or other portion of a car. The opening of the frame 1 has the walls thereof beveled as at 7 and the upper and lower Walls are connected by longitudinal ribs 8 and a front plate 9, said ribs being arranged in parallelism and formed integral with the front plate 9, which provides longitudinal slots 10 at the inner vertical edges of the frame 1. ing of the frame and said ribs adjacent to the rear edges thereof are provided with longitudinal slots 11, said slots corresponding in length to said ribs. Extending through the slots 11 are transversely arranged springs or resilient straps 13. Riveted or otherwise connected to the springs 13, intermediate the ends thereof, are carriers 15 adapted to slide upon longitudinal rails 16 formed integral with the inner side of the front plate 9. The rails 16, which are in the form of beads are arranged longitudinally of the front plate 9 and in parallelism, whereby the springs 13 can be evenly shifted relatively to the front plate 9 and always maintained in parallelism.

Slidably mounted upon the front side of the plate 9 are holders 17 having rearwardly projecting end extensions 18 extending through the slots 10 and suitably connected to the ends of the springs 13. The holders 17 are cut away, as at 19 to reduce the weight of the same and each holder intermediate the ends thereof, has a forwardly projecting finger piece 20 to facilitate the adjustment of said holder. The holders have the edges 21 thereof contacting with the front plate 9 rounded, to prevent a card 22 from being injured by the holders, when held in engagement with the front plate. The resiliency of the springs 13 is sufiicient to normally retain the holders in engagement with the card 22 and retain said card in frictional engagement with the front plate 9, whereby the jarring or vibrating of rolling stock will not dislodge the card.

It is impossible for the holders to become accidentally displaced relatively to the frame 1 and both holders can be employed for holding one card or each holder a single card.

The holder in its entirety can be made of light and durable metal and permanently secured to the side wall or other support of a car. A. card held by the holder can be easily and quickly removed, checked over and registered or any card placed in position.

While in the drawing there is illustrated a preferred embodiment of the invention, it i to be understood that the structural elements are susceptible to such variations as fall within the scope of the appended claims.

2. A card holder comprising a face plate 10 forming a rest for a card, longitudinally extending rails projecting from the back of said plate, a carrier traveling upon said rails, a spring connected to said carrier and extending beyond the side edges of the plate, and a slidable clamping piece arranged for- 1,5 Wardly of said plate and having rearWardly extending portions connected to the ends of said spring.
