FRANK W. PRINGLE, 0F MEARS, MICHIGAN.
WRENCH.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June 18, 1912.
Application filed November 7, 1910. Serial No. 591,201.
To all 'whom t may concern Be it known that I, FRANK W. PRINGLE, a citizen of the United States, residing at Mears, in the county of Oceana and State of Michigan, have invented a new and useful Improvement in Wrenches, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in wrenches, the object being to rovide a wrench with a slidably mounts jaw which can be moved easily and quickly and always locked.
Another object of my invention is to provide a wrench in which the sliding jaw is provided with a pair of pivoted dogs adapted to co-act with notches formed in the sides of the shank of the wrench, which are out of transverse alinement, whereby the jaw can be moved quickly to t any size nut.
A still further object of my invention is to provide the pivoted dogs with handles connected together by a coiled spring, in order to hold the dogs into engagement with the sides of the shank.
With these objects in view, the invention consists in the novel features of construction, combination and arrangement of parts, hereinafter fully described and pointed out in the claim.
In the drawing forming a part of this speciiication:-Figure 1 is a side elevation of my improved wrench. Fig. 2 is a top plan view the handle being broken ofi". Fig. 3 is a section taken transversely through the wrench.
Referring to the drawing, A indicates a shank which is provided with a fixed jaw B at its outer end, and a handle C at its inner end. The sides of the shank A are notched as clearly shown at D, the grooves of which are out of transverse alinement for the purpose later described.
Slidably mounted on the shank A is a j aw E which is provided with eyes E upon opposite sides carrying pintle pins F on which are mounted the eyes of dogs G, which are adapted to co-act with the notches D of the shank, in such a manner as to lock the slidably mounted jaw E in its adjusted position.
The dogs G are provided with rearwardly projecting handle portions H and I which extend over the back of the shank, and are provided with knobs H I extending outwardly in opposite directions, whereby the same can be readily operated by the thumb and fore-finger. The handles H and I are connected together by a coiled spring J for holding the dogs into engagement in the shank of the wrench, whereby one of the dogs will always be -held within one of the notches of the shank, and the other dog on one of the ribs between the notches.
From the foregoing description, it will be seen that I have provided a wrench with a sliding jaw having a pair of spring actuated dogs which are normally held into engagement with the shank of the wrench so as to hold the jaw securely.
What I claim is In a wrench, the combination with a shank provided with a fixed jaw at one end, and a handle at the other, of a aw slidably mounted on said shank, said shank being provided with notched sides out of transverse alinement, eyes formed on the sliding jaw carrying pintle pins, dogs mounted on said pintle pins adapted to engage the notches of said shank, handles extending rearwardly and toward each other from said dogs, a coiled spring connecting said handles, and knobs carried by the ends of said handles extending in opposite directions.
