Description

A. SERFOZA.
WRENCH.
APPLICATION FILED APR. 28, 1909.
Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ANTON SERFOZA, OF CHICAGO, ILLINOIS.
WRENCH.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, ANTON Snnroze, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, county of Cook, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in renches, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to wrenches, more particularly to the sliding-jaw type thereof.
The object of my invention is to provide a wrench of the class mentioned which will be of such novel and improved construction as to adapt the same to be readily and quickly manipulated.
A further object is to provide a wrench as mentioned which will be of the highest possible efficiency and further which will be strong, durable, and simple of construction, hence of low cost to manufacture.
Other objects will appear hereinafter.
ith these objects in view my invention consists in a wrench characterized as above mentioned and in certain details of construction and arrangement of parts all as will be hereinafter fully described and particularly pointed out in the claims.
11y invention will be more readily understood by reference to the accompanying drawing forming a part of this specification, and in which,
Figure l is a side elevation of my improved wrench, port-ions being shown in section to better illustrate its construction, the sliding-jaw thereof being shown in locked position, Fig. 2 is a similar elevation showing the sliding-jaw released, and Fig. 3 is an enlarged transverse section taken on line 50 w of Fig. 1.
Referring now to the drawings 1 indicates the body of the wrench comprised of the shank 2, handle 3, and the stationary jaw 41-, the latter being secured to the outer extremity of the shank 2 in any suitable manner. Slidably mounted upon the shank 2 is a movable jaw 5 provided in one of its inner surfaces with teeth 6 adapted to interlock with or engage coacting teeth 7 formed in the surface of said shank adjacent said surface of said jaw, such teeth being adapted, when in interlocking position, to hold said jaw 5 against relative movement upon said shank.
Having its extremities 8 pivotally mounted in the enlarged handle-forming shank portion 9 and the under side of the jaw 4f, the same being positioned adjacent the rearward Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 28, 1909.
Serial No. 492,746.
edge surface of said shank, is an elongated cam member 10. A projecting finger piece 11 formed preferably integrally with the latter, the same being positioned thereon preferably at the lower end portion thereof, is provided to effect the actuation of said cam.
Having its extremities 12 loosely resting in the recesses 13 provided for the reception thereof in the-inner surfaces of the jaw 1 and shank portion 9 is an elongated bar 14:. Leaf springs 15 provided at the extremities of said bar, the latter being preferably recessed, as shown, to accommodate the same, the outward 'or free extremities thereof being adapted to engage the outer extremities of the recesses 13, are adapted to normally hold said bar in contact with the outer side of said cam member.
WVith the construction as shown and described, upon positioning the cam member 10, as shown in Figs. 1 and 3, the same will force the bar 1 1 into contact with the rearward inner surface of the jaw 5, said bar in turn forcing the latter rewardly. In such event the teeth 6 provided in said jaw will be brought to engage the teeth 7 of the shank 2, obviously causing the locking of said jaw in position upon the latter. Upon rocking said cam member, by means of the finger piece 11, to a position as shown in full lines in Fig. 2 and in dotted lines in Fig. 3, the jaw 5 will obviously be released, in which event the same may be moved upon the shank 2 to any desired position.
While I have shown what I deem to be the preferable form of my device, I do not wish to be limited thereto, as there might be many changes made in the details of construction and arrangement of parts with out departing from the spirit of the invention comprehended within the scope of the appended claims.
Having described my invention what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:
1. In a wrench, the combination with a body comprising a shank toothed along one edge, a fixed jaw, and a handle, of a jaw slidable on said shank, capable of transverse movement with respect thereto, and provided with teeth adapted to engage the teeth of said shank; a rotatable cam coextensive in length with said shank and arranged to draw said slidable jaw transversely on said shank, substantially as described.
Patented Aug. 31, 1909.
' 2. In a wrench, the combination with a body comprising a shank toothed along its front edge, a fixed jaw, and a handle, of a rotatable cam mounted adjacent the rear edge of said shank and coextensive therewith; a slidable jaw provided with an opening adapted to embrace said shank and cam and provided with teeth adapted to engage said shank teeth; and means for rotating said cam, substantially as described.
3. In a wrench, the combination with a body comprising a shank toothed along its front edge, a fixed jaw, and a handle, of a rotatable cam mounted adjacent the rear edge of said shank and coextensive therewith, a transversely sliding bar mounted in c notches in the fixed jaw and handle; springs yieldingly holding said bar against said cam; a slidable jaw provided with an opening adapted to embrace said shank, cam and bar and provided with teeth adapted to engage said shank teeth; and means for rotating said cam, substantially as described. In testimony whereof I have signed my name to this specification in the presence of two subscribing witnesses.
