Description

April 22, 1930. w. MONTENEY WRENCH Filed June 12, 1928 Mm M 77 Inventor 71? E072 fmey Patented Apr. 22,1930
UNETED STATES FAT r orries WARD MONTENEY, OF CASTLE ROCK, WASHINGTON WRENCH:
Application filed June 12,
The present invention relates to improvements in wrenches, and'has for its principal object to provide a means for adjusting the movable jaw with respect to the stationary jaw in order to accommodate objects of different sizes, means being provided for positively: holding the movable jaw in any adjusted position to prevent slipping of the same, while the wrench is in use.
A further object is to provide a Wrench of the above mentioned character which is simple in construction, inexpensive, strong and durable and further well adapted to the purpose for which it is, designed.
()ther objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description when taken in connection with i tionary jaw 2 having gripping teeth formed the accompanying drawing. I
' In the accompanying drawing wherein l ke reference characters indicate corresponding parts throughout the same:
Figure 1 is a side elevation of the wrench embodying my invention.
Figure 2 is a sectional View; taken approximately on the line 22 of Figure 1 looking in the direction of the arrows, and
Figure 3 is a similar section taken on the line 3-3 of Figure 1 looking in the dlrection of the arrows.
In the drawing wherein for the purpose of illustration is shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, the numeral 1 designates a substantially rectangular shaped shank that is formed at one end with the staon the inner face of one end portion thereof as shown at 3. The other end portion of this j aw that projects beyond the inner side edge of the shank 1 is formed with a hammer head 4: whereby the wrench may be used as a hammer when so desired. The inner side edge of the shank is formed with the teeth 5 and the purpose thereof will be presently described in detail.
'A sleeve like member 6 is slidable 011 the shank 1, and theintermediate portion of this sleeve-like member is out out at its outer side, as indicated at 7. Formed on one end of this sleeve-like member and projecting outwardly therefrom is the jaw 8 that cooperates with 1928. Serial No. 284,822.
2 in the manner well known in the art.
The inner side of this sleeve is formed with the teeth 10 that are adapted for cooperation with the ratchet teeth 5 formed in the inner side edge of the shank 1 and the sleeve is of such width as to be capable of lateral sliding movement with respect .to the shank so that .60 the teeth 10. will befree to move along the toothed edge of the shank without engagement of the teeth 5 as suggested in Figure 1 of the drawing. i
For the purpose of moving thesleeve 6 G5 outwardly whereby to lock the teeth 10 in engagement with the teeth 5 to secure the movable jaw 8 in any adjusted posit-ion with respectto the stationary jaw 2, I provide the elongated lever 11 which is pivoted at one end to the inner end portion of the jaw memjacent' edge portions of the shank and the lever for normally urging the lever outwardly against the crown portion of the U-shaped bracket'as clearly shown in Figures 1 and 3.
It is readily obvious that when the free end portion of the shank 1 which acts as a handle, and the adjacent portion of the lever 11 are grasped, and said lever is pushed toward the shank against the tension of the spring 14, said lever will engage with the inner side of the sleeve and move the same outwardly with respect to the shank 1 whereby to hold 7 the teeth 10 in engagement with the teeth 5, thus securing the jaw member 8 in any vertically adjusted position with'respect to the jaw 2Q The 75 It is thought from the foregoing description that the advantages and novel features of my invention will be readily apparent.
While I have shown the preferred embodiment of my invention, it is to be understood that minor changes in the size, shape and arrangement of parts may be resorted to Without departing tfrom the gs'piiniit of their;- vention and the scope of the appended claim.
Having thus described the invention, What I claim as new anddesire to :secure by Letters Patent is In a wrench, the combination with :a.
shank provided with ratchet teeth on the M inner side edge thereof, .a stationary jaw formed on one edge of the shank, asleeve slldably mounted on the shank and havlng an opening oi such size as to permit the same to move laterally with respect to the shank,
a jaw formed on one .end ofthe' sleeve and extending laterally therefrom for cooperation with the stationaryqaw, the int-ermedisate portion of the sleeve being cut out at its outer side, teeth provided on the wall of the opening formedby the removal oil a portion of the sleeve, an elongated lever pivoted at one end tothe'stationary jaw for disposition adjacent the inner side edge of the sleeve and adapted to engage the same to move the sleeve laterally whereby the teeth of the sleeve are brought into locking engagement with the teeth on the shank 'to secure the movable jaw against sliding movement.
in testimony whereof I aifix my signature.
