This invention relates to new and useful improvements and structural refinements in turning devices for jar tops, or the like, and the principal object of the invention is to provide a device of the character herein described, which may be conveniently and efiectively employed for the tightening or loosening of tops, caps and covers on jars, bottles, and similar containers.
A further object of the invention is to provide a turning device of the character described which is simple in construction and which may be quickly, easily and conveniently manipulated.
Another object of the invention is to provide a turning device which may be efiectively employed in association with jar caps or tops of various sizes and types.
An additional object of the invention is to provide a turning device which will not easily become damaged, which will readily lend itself to economical manufacture, and which is otherwise well adapted for the purpose for which it is intended.
With the above more important objects in view, and such other objects as may become apparent as this specification proceeds, the invention consists essentially of the arrangement and construction of parts as illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which:
Figure 1 is a top plan view of the invention, showing the same in use;
Figure 2 is an edge view of the invention per se, the same being taken in the direction of the arrow 2 in Figure 1;
Figure 3 is an elevational detail of a gripping jaw used in the invention; and
Figure 4 is a cross sectional view, taken substantially in the plane of the line 4-4 in Figure 1.
Like characters of reference are employed to designate like parts in the specification and throughout the several views.
Referring now to the accompanying drawings in detail, the invention consists of a turning device for jar tops designated generally by the reference character III, the same embodying in its construction a pair of spaced, substantially parallel arms II, I2, the end portions of which are equipped with a pair of coacting handles I3, I4, respectively, hereinafter more fully described.
A laterally projecting member I5, hereinafter referred to as the stationary jaw, is rigidly secured by means of rivets I6 to the arm I2, and the jaw I is also pivotally attached, as at H, to the arm II, as will be clearly apparent from the accompanying drawings.

the rivets I9 to a keeper plate 28, and a cam 2I is interposed between the parts I8, 28 and is rigidly secured in, position therebetween by means of the rivets I9, as will be readily understood.
The cam 2 Iassumes the form of a plate having a configuration of a parallelogram, two opposite sides of which are indicated by the reference characters 22, 23.
It will be observed that the movable jaw I8, including the plate 20 and the cam 2|, is slidable on the arms II, l2 in the directions of the arrow 24, the end portion 25 of the jaw I8 and the plate 20 coacting with the cam 2I to provide what may be referred to as a pair of channels 26 in which the arms I3, I2 may be slidably received.
Means are provided for preventing excessive spreading of the arms II, I2, said means consisting of a strip 21' which is doubled upon itself so as to assume a substantially U-shaped configuration, best shown in Figure 4.
The free end portions of the strip 21 are secured by means of suitable rivets, or the like, 28 to the arm I2, while the closed end portion 29 of the strip straddles the arm I I. Sufficient clearance is, of course, provided so as to facilitate limited but not excessive spreading movement of the two arms (II, I2).
The aforementioned handles I3, I4 are secured to their respective arms II, I2 by means of the rivets 33, and it should be understood that the handle I4 is equipped in one end portion thereof with a recess 3! in order to accommodate the end portions of the strip El, while an end portion of the handle I3 is similarly provided with an open slot or recess 32 which is adapted to movably accommodate the closed end portion 29 of the strip.
Finally, it should be stated that the opposing edges of the jaws I5, I8 are formed with a series of gripping teeth 33, 34, respectively, as is best shown in Figure 1.
When the invention is placed in use, the teeth 33, 33 of the jaws I5, I8 are applied to the top or cover 35 of the jar 36 from which the cover is to be removed (or to which the cover is to be applied, as the case may be), whereupon the handles I3, l4 are pressed together, so that the opposing, inner surfaces 31, 38 of the arms II, 12, respectively, engage the sides 22, 23 of the parallelogram or cam 2|, whereby the jaws I5, I8 will be urged toward each other, as indicated by the arrows 39.
By virtue of this action, the top Or cap 35 of the jar 36 will be firmly and securely gripped between the jaws I5, I8, whereby application or removal of the jar cover will be conveniently facilitated.
As will be readily observed, the device may be adjusted so as to fit various types and sizes of jar tops by simply releasin the grip on the handles 13, I 4 and sliding the movable jaw 18 in the directions of the arrow 24, as required.
If desired, a hook-shaped member #0 may be secured to one of the arms II by suitable rivets 41, the structure of the member 40 being such that caps may be removed thereby from bottles, or the like. 7
It is believed that the advantages "and use of the invention will be clearly apparent .from the foregoing disclosure, and acebrding ly, further description thereof at this point is deemed unnecessary.
Having described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A turning device for jar tops comprising a pair of spaced substantially parallel arms, a stationary jaw secured to one end of one arm and pivoted to the adjacent end of the seconel arm, the remaining ends of said arms constituting a pair of handles, a movable jaw slidable on intermediate portions of said arms, and a cam '4 provided on said movable jaw, said cam being disposed between said arms and having parallel side edges extending obliquely to the movable jaw, said edges bein engageable by opposing inner edges of said arms whereby the jaws may be urged together by pressing together said arms. 2. The device as defined in claim 1 together with a plate secured to said cam in spaced relation with respect to said movable ijaw, said movable jaw and said plate coacting with said cam to form a pair of channels slidably receiving said arms.
