CORD-HOLDER FOR WINDOW-SHADES.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed March 31, 1911.
Serial No. 618,226.
To all whom t may concern:
Be it known that I, TiLLiAM B. CAswnLL, citizen of the United States, residing at Newport, in the county of Newport and State of Rhode Island, have invented certain new and. useful Improvements in Cord- Holders for Vindow-Shades, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to improvements in window shade cord holders oi' clamps, and has for one of its objects to improve the construction and increase the efficiency and utility of devices of this character.
Another object of the invention is the provision of a simply constructed device of this character whereby the tension on the cord may be controlled and increased or decreased as required, either to adapt the clamping device to the weight of the curtain or to adapt the device to the size of the cord.
Vith these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain novel features -of construction as hereinafter shown and described and then specically pointed out in the claims, and in the drawings illustrative of the preferred embodiment of the inven tion, Figure 1 is a side elevation of the improved device; Fig. 2 is an edge view of the same; Fig. 3 is an end elevation; Fig. 4 is a sectional view on the line 2 2 of Fig. 2.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawings by the same reference characters. The improved device embodies a casing, preferably made from a single piece or plate of sheet metal bent to shape and comprising a base portion 10, having extended ends 11- 12, perforated to receive holding screws orl other fastening devices 13 and with a rear portion 14 extending at right angles to the body 10, and with an outer portion 15 extending in parallel relation to the base 10 'and spaced therefrom. The rear 14 and the outer portion 15 are shorter than the base 10 so that the portion 11-12 extends beyond the portion 15, as shown.
Extending through the two portions 10- 15 are pins 16-#17- A stop pin or lug 18 extends from the portion 15 at one end. Mounted to swing upon the pin 16 is a clamp cam 19 having teeth 2() in its. shorter end for engaging against the cord, represented at- 21, and which is extended through the frame and between the portion 10-15 and against the rear 14 and in position to be engaged by the toothed terminal 20 of the cam. The outer or longer end of the cam projects beyond the edges of the portion 10-15 so that it may be actuated by the thumb, and is limited in its movement in one direction by the stop 18. The cam 19 is thus retained by gravity with its toothed portion 20 normally in engagement with the cord 21, and the tooth portion will be released from engagement with the cord when the cam 19 is moved upwardly against its stop 1S. Thus when the cani is moved .upwardly the cord is free to be moved within the casing, or the casing free to be moved upon the cord, as the case may be.
Mounted to swing upon the pin 17 is a relatively long grip device 22, which bears constantly against the cord 21. Also mounted to swing upon the pin 17 is a holding member 23, through which a threaded pin 24 is inserted at its free end. The member 23 is provided with an internally grooved portion, and a spring 25 is arranged between the two members 23 22, as shown, and thus exerts its force to hold the member 22 yieldably in engagement with the cord 21. The member 15 is provided with a curved slot 26 in a segment of which the pin 17 is the center and through which the threaded pin 24 extends. The pin 24 is provided with an enlarged head 27 which bears upon the outer face of the portion 15 at the sides of the slot 26. By this simple means it will be obvious that the member 23 may'be adjusted upon its pin 17 by releasing the screw pin 27 and then turning it tight again after the member 23 has been adjusted. By this means the tension of the spring 25 may be controlled and its force increased or decreased by adjusting the member 23 by means of the pin 24 and the slot 26. Thus the member 23 may be adjusted any required extent within the range of the slot 26, and thus increase or decrease the pressure of the member 22 against the cord 21. By this means the improved device may be readily adapted to curtains of various sizes and also to cords of various sizes without any change of structure in the device.
The improved device is simple in construction, can be independently manufactured, and contains only four pieces, besides the pins, the springs and the holding screws. The whole device is of metal and ratenteaJune 11, i912.

Having thus described the invention, what is claimed as new is:
1. A window cord holder, comprising a frame formed from a plate bent into U shape to form spaced sides and a. cord guide at the bend, one of said frame sides having a segmental slot, a pivot pin extending through the sides of said frame, a clampI member swinging upon said pin in position to bear against a cord within said guide, a tension member swinging upon said pin, a spring between said tension member and clamp member, and a clamp screw operating in said tension member and extending through said slot and provided with a head bearing upon the frame side, whereby the tension member may be adjusted.
2. A window cord holder comprising a :frame .having spaced sides and a cord.
guide, one of said frame sides having a segmental slot, a clamp member swinging between said frame sides in position to bear against a cord within said guide, a tension member swinging between `said frame sides, a` spring operating between said tension member and clamp member, and a clamp ldevice engaging said tension *member through'said slot.
