. Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed. November 18, 1908.
Patented Mar. 1, 1910. Serial No. 463,172.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, EDWARD OBRIEN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Hartford, in the county of Hartford and State of Connecticut, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line- Holders, of which the following is a specification.
The object of my invention is to provide a device of the class specified which has features of novelty and advantage.
Figure l is a side view of the holder, with a line, in its binding position. Fig. 2 is a side view of the holder, with the line, in its loosened position. Fig. 3 is a perspective view of the holder, without the line.
1 is the base of the holder having an eye -2 and a longitudinal slot --3. Pivoted at 5 in said slot is a binding piece twhich is adapted to oscillate on said pivot. One end of the line called the tieline -1lis secured to the base portion at the eye -2. Any other means may be used for securing said tie-line. The rope which is to be held by said holder is passed through slot -3 at 6- and through an eye 7-- in the end of the binding piece 4 adjacent the pivot and then back through slot 3 at -8--. The line before it passes through said slot is called the main line -9-5 after it passes through it is called the pulley line 10.
The operation of the device is as follows: The binding piece 4:- is normally in the position occupied as shown in Fig. 2. The line may be then tightened as required by drawing out the pulley line 10-. As the tension on the pulley line is released the binding piece is drawn into the position shown in Fig. 1 by the tension and pressure of the main line which forces the binding piece against the pulley line 10 thus binding the said pulley line securely between the binding piece and the end 1t of the slot and preventing tension of the main line from drawing said pulley line back through the slot. It is apparent that the tendency of the pulley line to be drawn back through the slot by an increasing tension on the main line is counteracted by a proportionately increasing pressure of the binding piece against the pulley line. If it is desired to tighten said main line further, the pulley line may again be drawn and by pulling the same, the
binding piece is forced back to the position shown in Fig. 2 thus releasing the pressure on the pulley line and allowing said line to be drawn through the slot as far as desired. When the tension of the pulley line is again released the binding piece is pulled back by the main line to the position shown in Fig. 1 again binding said pulley line. The end of the slot -3- is grooved at -14;-. Also there is a groove 13 in the binding piece 4. The object of those grooves is to keep both the main line and the pulley line in place and to furnish a much larger frictional surface between these lines and the parts of the holder with which they come in contact. The same result, that is, large frictional surface is produced by reason of having the eye -7 in the binding piece, allowing the rope to pass almost entirely around the binding piece -l. It is deemed important that the cam portion of the clamp be on the opposite side of the pivot from the handle and that it be broadened and extended and that it work in the opening in the base portion which is provided for the passage of the bight of the rope, whereby the cam portion is received in the bight of the rope and is engaged by both the main line and the pulley line portions thereof on the same side of the pivot. The holder may be released at any time by pressing up the end -l2 of the binding piece from the position shown in Fig. 1 to that shown in Fig. 2, thus releasing the said pulley line and allowing the main line to be withdrawn at pleasure.
Claim.
A line holder comprising a base portion, a cam-acting-clamp portion pivoted within said base portion and having a handle with an eye there-through adjacent the pivot and between the pivot and the free ends of the handle, said base portion having an opening for the passage of a bight of a rope, the cam portion being on the opposite side of the pivot from the handle and broadened and extended and adapted to be received in the bight of the rope to be engaged by both the main line and pulley line portions thereof.
In testimony whereof I afIiX my signature in presence of two witnesses.
