Description

'March 10, 1925. 1,528,747 J. G. ALLEN LINE GRIP-PING DEVICE Filea'van. 27, 1922 Patented Mar. 10, 1925.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
JACOB GUY ALLEN, 01F BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS, ASSIG-NOR OF ONE-HALF TO NOYES JACKSON. OF BELVIDERE, ILLINOIS.
LINE-GRIPIING DEVICE.
' Application filed January 27, 1922,
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, JACOB Grur- ALLEN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Belvidere, county of Boone, and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Line-Gripping Devices, of which the following is a specification. This invention relates to a gripping device for securely clamping or fastening in position a line, such as a clothes line or the like. While it is especially adapted for holding clothes lines it is also capable of use in holding any line or rope of suitable size on which a pull is exerted.
Among the objects of my invention is to provide a line gripping device of maximum efiiciency, simplicity, and economy, and of such nature that the line or rope may be instantly applied to be gripped and instantly released when gripped; further to provide coacting parts to form a kink 0r crimp in the rope when gripped, and a stop to enable the rope to be instantly positioned centrally of the device, and also permit the rope or line to be pulled out sidewise for releasing the same; further to provide such construction that the crimp or kink formation in the rope will be supplemented by an offset in the rope laterally of the device to augment the gripping action when the body of the rope is pulled to clamp the gripping lever on the rope; further to provide a minimum of parts of a nature to be easily and instantly assembled; and such further objects, advantages and capabilities as will later more fully appear.
My invention further resides in the combination, construction and arrangement of parts illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and while I have shown therein a preferred embodiment, I desire the same to be understood as illustrative only and not as limiting my invention.
In the drawings:
Fig. 1 is a perspective view showing my improved gripping device with a line held in gripped position.
Fig. 2 is a vertical longitudinal sectional view of the device, a portion of the gripping lever being shown in elevation for the sake of clearness; and
Fig. 3 is a side elevation looking toward the gripping or clamping lever.
Referring to the drawings, my improved Serial No. 532,156.
The base plate or supporting'inember 1 p is suitably secured, in a vertical position or otherwise as desired, to a post, the side of a building or other support, by means of securing elements 7, which may be screws, bolts, nails, or the like. At or adjacent its lower end the plate 1 is formed with an outwardly projecting stop member 8 against which the line or rope 9 may be quickly positioned to bring the latter into approximate alinement with the centralportion of the clamping jaw 10 at the inner end of clamping lever 2. Formed in the base plate 1 and opposite jaw 10 is a recess or groove 11 into which the rope 9 is forced by jaw 10 to cause a more effective gripping action as a result of the kink or crimp set up in the rope, as clearly shown in Fig. 2. The opposite end of the lever 2 is of bifurcated formation to form a seat for the rope, which when pulled in the direction of the arrow in Fig. 1 will force clamping jaw 10 into gripping engagement with the rope forcing the latter into recess 11.
It is to be noted in Fig. 3 that the construction of my device is such as to cause a considerable offset to be formed in the rope in passing along the side of lug 8, then bending laterally to pass around the side of neck 5, and then back under and through the recess of the bifurcated end of the lever. This lateral offset in the rope very con-- siderably augments the gripping action of the clamping jaw 10. Should it be desired to quickly free the rope from the clamping device all that is necessary is to pull the rope laterally away from the lug or post 8, and away from under jaw 10.
In assembling the device the pintles may be inserted through the slot 6, and then rotated to bring them into pockets 1 after which base plate 1 may be secured in position to its supporting surface.
Having now described my invention, I claim 1- l. A line gripping device having a base member, a lever pivotally mounted there on and formed at one end to grip a rope against the base member when the rope is passed under the opposite end of lever and pulled, an upstanding guide-post on" said base member adjacent the gripping end of the lever to position the'r'ope substantially centrally of said end, and the side of the base member laterally opposite said post being free'of obstructionsto permit the rope to be quickly released by a lateral pull.
2. A line; gripping device comprising a base'me n'iber having a clamping lever pivotall'y mounted ther'eon,'said lever having at one end a clamping jaw and at the other a rope receiving portion, said base portion having a recess opposite said" jaw into which a rope is adapted to beerimped, and a guiding post on said basemember a dj'a cen-t's'aidjaw for positioning the rope" substantially centrally of said jaw and recess.
3.; A line gripping device having a base member, a lever pivoted thereon and having at one end a' clamping jaw and at the other a rope-receiving-guicleway in ali'nement with the center of said jaw, a neck portion on said lever, pintles on said neck porti n,
a groove in said base member opposite said jaw, and a guide post on said base member adjacent said jaw, the inner face of said post being adjacent the longitudinal center of the device so as'to cause the rope to pass substantially centrally under" said jaw to crimp the same in said groove, and then be deflectedlaterally around said neck portion and back again and then up centrally through said" guide-way to form adouble kink or offset in said rope when in clamped position.
v 4'. A line gripping device having a base plate adapted to be'fixed' to a post or the like", a pair of a'lined upstanding pockets in said base'plate, a. slot between said pockets, a' clamping lever having a neck portion ex tending through said slot, a pair of pintl'es on said. neck portion and seated respective ly in said pockets, a clamping jaw on said lever, said base plate having a guide post adjacent said jaw on one side and freeof obstruction on the other side so a's'to guide a rope to a position centrally of the jaw when being clamped, and permit it to" be pulled s'idewise from under said jaw to releaSe it In witness whereof, I hereunto subscribe my name tothi's specification.
