of Newark, county of Essex, and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Clothes-Line Holders, of which the following is a specification.

My inventionrelates to holders for holding ropes or lines with reference to one an other, and is particularly adapted for use as a clothes line holder, though devices in. accordance with my invention may be made use of for other purposes.

The object of my invention is to improve devices of this kind in important particulars, and with this and other objects in view my invention consists of the parts, improvements and combinations hereinafter described.

In the drawing forming a part of this specification Figure 1 is a side elevational view showing a fastener embodying my invention attached to a clothes line but not clamped-thereon. Fig. 2 is a. similar view showing the fastener in clamping position. Fig. 3 is an end view of the fastener shown in Figs. 1 and 2 looking in the direction of the arrow of Fig. 4, and Fig. 4 is a cross sectional view on the line M, Fig. 3.

A holder in accordance with my invention is preferably made by casting, and by preference malleable iron castings are made use of, and such holdercomprises I two main portions, the body or frame portion 10 and the gripping member 11 pivoted in the member 10.

The body portion 10 comprises a back 12, having the groove 13 formed therein and extending through substantially its entire length, and being provided with a hole 1 1 or similar means for attaching a bight of a rope which may be permanently attached to, At the end opposite such attaching means the side walls of the groove 13 are extended, as shown at 15, 15, so as to make up in this neighborhood a substantially U-shaped body portion. The extensions 15, 15 are substantially half round when looked. at from a sideielevation, as in Figs. 1, 3.and 4. The bottom of the groove '13 is preferably provided with a plurality of serrations or notches 16 which coact with the gripping member. The gripping member 11 is pivoted at 11 between the walls 15, 15 and comprises the eccentric head 17 which has peripheral serrations 18 to coact Specification of Letters Patent.

with the serrations 16 at the bottom of the groove in the body portion and the handle 19 which is preferably integral with the head 17 Since a line must be loosened so as to provide for stretching when wet or out of use,

there is asurplus of line which has to be drawn up when the line is wanted for use. It has heretofore been proposed to form an opening in the handle of the gripping mem: her, through which the surplus line may be passed. With such arrangement, however, the line frequently binds within the opening in the handle, as in the case of the ordi-v nary rope holders used on tents, and furthermore, the thickness of the line is always interposed between the handle and the back member, thus preventing the clamp from being completely closed, as is sometimes desirable when a worn or thin line is to be held.

According to my invention the surplus line is permitted to pass out freely at one side of the device and does not interfere with the operation of the handle at any time, and there is no tendency for any binding action except when the line is intentionally clamped by the holder. I obtain this result by providing a recessed or concaved portion 20 in the handle 19 adjacent to the eccentric head 17 and by extending the outer end of the handle in the direction of the back portion 'of the body part, and this is preferably done by curving the handle 19 toward the body part at its extremity, thus providing the recess or -concavity 20 through which the surplus line may pass out laterally without interfering with the action of the handle at any time.

The operation of my improved device will be readily understood. It may be used in any connection in which it is desired to clamp a line or a bight of a line in respect to another line or-part of the same line and, for instance, may be conveniently used as a clothes line holder, in which case it is preferably placed in the lower bight of the line beneath the pulley, One end of the clothes line 21, which may run in pulleys 22, is l permanently secured .to the body member by being passed through the hole 14 and tied or lmotted in place, and the remaining end of the line is passed in the opening formed between the eccentric head 17 and the back 12 and side walls 15, 15, fitting in the groove 13 in the back 12 and being permitted to fall away laterally through the recess or con.- cavity 20 above referred to. When the line is to be loosened the clamping member is turned down, as shown in Fig. 1, but when the line is to be tightened up the lower bight is drawn through the holder until suflicient line has been taken up and the clamping member is then turned by means of the handle 19, thus firmly clamping the line between the body port-ion of the clamping member and permitting the line to fall away laterally through the recess or concavity 20 in all positions of the clamping member and its handle.

It is to be understood that the foregoing description and the illustration referred, to are for the purpose of illustration only and that my invention is not confined thereto, but that modifications from this specific showing may be resorted to, within the scope of the following claim, without departing I from my invention or sacrificing any of its advantages.

Having thus described my invention, I claim:

In a clothes line holder, a body member comprising a grooved back portion and separated side parts, the back portion being integral with the side parts and extending endwise therebeyond, and being provided at one end with an opening, whereby a bight of rope may be secured to said body member, and said back portion being continuous except for said opening, an eccentric clamping member pivoted between the side'portions of the body member and provided with serrations, the body member having internal serrations to coact with the serrations on the clamping member to securely hold a tight of rope therebetween, and a handle for the clamping member, said handle being curved Y to present a concavity toward the body mem-,
