GEORGE J. BATZER, OF CLEVELAND, OHIO. I
PULLEY AND ROPE OR CABLE HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed June 18, 1908.
Patented March 23, 1909.
Serial No. 439,250.
To all whom it may concern: 1
Be it known that I, GEORGE J. BATZER, citizen of the United States, residing at Cleveland, in the county of Cuyahoga and State of Ohio, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley and Hope or Cable Holders, of which the following is a specification.
This invention is a combined pulley and rope or cable holder, comprising a pulley or block provided with a hook, and having camlocking devices which may be applied to the ro e to hold or clutch the same upon the pu ley.
The device will be found particularly useful in connection with clothes lines, to hold the line as desired, but it is not limited to such use andmay be applied anywhere, to hold a rope or cable of any size.
The invention is illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which- Figure 1 is a side view, partly broken away; Fig. 2 is a section on the line 2-2 of Fig. 1; Fig. 3 is a detail in side view of a modification; and Fig. 4 is a section on the line 44: of Fig. 3.
Referring specifically to the drawings, the frame of the pulley or sheave consists of a, cheek plate 3 provided at one end with a hook 1, for which a ring or other attaching device may be substituted, according to the 1 place where the sheave is to be attached. A l lip, 2, projects from the shank of the hook and forms a recess for the housing of the cam pivots and the spring. The ground wheel 8 is fixed to the cheek 3 by the pivot 9, and the described construction forms an open sheave so that the rope can be caught over the wheel without pulling through.
To hold the rope wherever desired, and lock the pulley wheel, a pair of cams 4 is provided, pivoted by pins 6, and located on opposite sides so as to catch in either or both directions. The holding faces of the cams are notched, and when either cam is turned in to engagement with the rope on the ulley wheel, it binds and holds the same an locks the pulley. At its inner end each cam piece has a knuckle 10 pressed by one end of a coiled spring 7 housed in the recess under the lip, and the cam may be turned to cause the s )ring to bear on opposite sides of the knuce and thus hold the cam in or out of engagement with the rope.
In the modified form shown in Figs. 3 and 4, instead of the wheel 8 a semi-circular grooved guide 1 1 is provided, projecting from the cheek 3, and the rope slides on this guide. The same kind of locking device is used. Where it is desired to hold a rope in one direction only, one of the cams can, of course, be omitted. Also, the wheel may be duplicated, forming a double pulley, and one or more of the locking devices applied to each. Various other modifications may be made, within the scope of the invention.
I claim:
1. A sheave provided with a rope catch consisting of a cam pivoted in the sheave frame and arranged to swing toward or from the sheave wheel, and to bind a r0 e against the wheel, the cam having a knuc e, and a spring held in the frame and bearing against the knuckle and adapted to hold the cam in or out of contact with the rope.
' 2. A rope catch for a sheave, comprising a pair of opposite cams pivoted in the sheave frame, and having knuckles, and a spring held in the frame and bearing at its opposite ends on said knuckles and adapted to hold the cams in or out of contact with the rope.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
GEORGE J. BATZER.
Witnesses:
JOHN A. BOMMHARDT, THERESA M. BATZER.
