PULLEY-BLOCK'.
I Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dec. 21, 1915.
Application filed June 16, 1915. Serial No. 34,466.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that W6,,.OSOAR F. (Lawson and JAMES FoRAx, citizens of the United States, residing at Biglake, in the county of Skagit and State of Washington, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Pulley-Blocks, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to certain improvements in pulley blocks and has relation more particularly to a device of this general character especially designed and adapted for use in connection with the lead line of donkey engines as employed in heavy logging operations; and it is an object of my invention to provide a novel and improved device of this general character whereby the lead line or cable may be readily and conveniently engaged with or disengaged from the sheave.
The invention consists in the details of construction and in the combination and arrangement of the several parts of our improved pulley block whereby certain important advantages are attained and'the device is rendered simpler, less expensive and otherwise more convenient and advan tageous for use, all as will be hereinafter more fully set forth. a
The novel features of the invention will be carefully defined in the appended claims.
In order that our invention may be the better understood, we will now proceed to describe the same with reference to the accompanying drawings, wherein- Figure 1 is a view in side elevation of a pulley block constructed in accordance with an embodiment of our invention; Fig. 2 is a top plan view of the device as herein disclosed; and Fig. 3 is a longitudinal sectional view taken through our device, with the.
swinging section shown in open adjustment.
As disclosed in the accompanying drawings, 1 denotes a strap or hanger substantially L-shape in form and having operatively engaged therewith in a conventional manner the clevis 2, said connection being afforded by the pivot pin 8 which has also pivotally engaged therewith the hook 4:, for a purpose to be hereinafter more particularly referred to.
5 denotes an arbor on'which the sheave 6 isrotatably mounted, said arbor having one extremity angular in cross section and positioned within a corresponding opening in the strap 1, as indicated at 7, whereby said arbor is held against axial rotation.
The opposite end portion of the arbor 5 is mounted within the side member 8 which is free of the strap 1 and provided with an outstanding lug 9 adapted to extend within the recess 10 produced in the mner surface of the swinging side section llwhen said section is adjusted into closed or operatlve position. The swinging section 11 is pivotally engaged, as at 12, with the strap or hanger 1 and is provided with the endwise movable latch member 14: adapted to coact with the keeper 15 carried by the side member 8. The latch member is positioned between the parallel flanges 16 carried by said section 11 which serves as a guard to prevent the latch member and its concomitant parts being injured by contact with extraneous objects.
Pivotally supported between the flanges 1 6 is the operating lever 17 for the latch member, said lever being of such a length as to have its free extremity projecting beyond the pivoted end of the section 11 and hav ing its opposite extremity provided with the oppositely directed arms 18. The arms 18 are'adapted to coact with the latch member 14 to impart the requisite reciprocation thereto in order to cause the same to be engaged with or disengaged from the keeper The flanges 16 are provided with the transversely alined openings 19 in which a pin 20 is adapted to be disposed and co acting with the lever 17 to maintain said lever in a depressed position whereby it may be readily employed for moving the swinging section 11 into an open position and in order to maintain the section in such open position, the section is provided with the lateral extension or finger 21 with which the hook member 4;, hereinbefore referred to, coacts in a manner which is believed to be clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings. WVith the section 11 in open position, it will be perceived that the lead or cable .may be readily disengaged from or applied to the pulley.
When the lever 17 has been ad usted to move the latch member 14: into operative engagement with the keeper 15, the pin 20 is disposed through the transversely alined openings 22 produced in the flanges 16 adj acent the pivoted extremity of the section 11,
; constructed in accordance with our 1nvention is of an extremely simple and comparatively inexpensive nature and is particularly well adapted for use by reason of the convenience and facility with which it may be. assembled, and it will also be obvious that our invention is susceptible of; some change and modification without material departure from the principles and spirit thereof and for this reason we do not wish,
to be understood as limiting ourselves to the precise arrangement and formation of the several partsherein shown in carrying out our invention in practice.
7. We clalmz' 1. A pulley block comprising a'hanger, a
"side section coacting therewith,- a sheave operatively supportedfbetween the hanger and the side section, aswinging section carried-by the hanger, a latch member carried by the swinging section,a keepercarried'by ,imparting reciprocating movement thereto.
' Copies of this patent mayfbe obtained for the first named section withwhich the latch member coacts, a lever pivotally engaged, with the swinging section and providedwith arms coacting with the latch member for 2. A pulley, block comprising a hanger,a side section coacting therewith, a sheave operatively supported between the hanger and the side section, ajswinging section cartion, it is ried by the hanger, a latch member carried bythe swinging'section, a keeper car-- 1 1 ried by the' first. namedsection with which the latch'member coacts, a lever pivotally engaged with the swinging section and provided with arms coacting with the latch member "for imparting reciprocating move mentthereto, and means coacting with the swinging section and the lever for ma1ntaming said lever aga nst movement where by the latch member may be locked in either operative 0r inoperative adjustment; i
3. A pulley blockcompri'sing a hanger,
a side section'coacting therewith, a. sheave operativelysupported betweenfthe hanger and the side 'sect1on,a swinging section car-' ried by the hanger, a latch member carried by the swinging section,'a keeper carried by I the first'namedsection with which the latch member coacts, a lever .pivotally engaged with' the swinging, section and provided vwith arms coacting. with the latch mem- 'ber vfor imparting reciprocatlng movement thereto, and means carriedby the hanger coacting, with the side section for holding the swinging. section in open "position.
