CABLE GRIP AND TAKE-UP.
No. 593,053. Patented Nov 2.1897.

UNITED STATES CABLE GRIP AND TAKE-UP.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 593,053, dated November 2, 1897.
Application filed April 28, 1897. Serial No. 634,243. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, CARL L. KLEITZ, a citi-. zen of the United States of America, residing at Sigourney, in the county of Keokuk and State of Iowa, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Cable Grips and Take-Ups, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings.
The object of this invention is to produce a grip for ropes, cables, and the like whereby the rope or cable may be readily adjusted and automatically clamped when pulled, it being my aim to prevent an undue amount of the rope or cable from winding on the drum, as such action is known to impair its durability.
A further object of the invention is to provide a grip which is adjustable to cables of varying diameter, making it at the same time strong, durable, and efficient and comparatively inexpensive to manufacture.
'With the above and other objects in view the invention consists in the novel details of construction, arrangement, and combination of parts to be hereinafter more fully set forth and specifically claimed.
In describing the invention in detail referonce is had to the accompanying drawings, forming part of this specification, wherein like characters of reference denote correspondin g parts in the several views,in which- Figure l is a side view of the clamp with the cable applied to a stump and the operating-cable in position in the clamp. Fig. 2 is a central vertical sectional viewof the clamp or clutch. Fig. 3 is a transverse sectional view.
In the drawings, 1 denotes the frame, having a securing-eye 2 at one end. The body of the frame is approximately semicircular and the upper edge'is provided with inclined concaved surfaces 3 and 4:, on which the lower surfaces of the sliding wedge 5 rides. Said wedge has a double inclined lower surface corresponding with the surface of the body. Thus as the lowermost portion of the incline is reached the wedge is prevented from further retrograde movement. The Wedge 5 has side lugs 6,which operatein slots 7,forn1ed in the side links 8, said links being pivoted to the sides of the frame, as at 8, with their upper ends connected bya bar 9, said barbeing rotatably secured so that the detachable wedge 10 will ride thereunder with reduced friction. The upper surface of the sliding wedge 5 and the lower surface of the detachable wedge 10 are serrated to insure a posi: tive engagement with the cable 11, which leads to the drum, while the cable 12 is connected with eye of the frame and is provided with means to form a loop to embrace a stump or other object. I
By referring to the drawings it will be seen that the cable 11 can be pulled through the wedge in the direction of the arrow until the same istaut and when a pull in the opposite direction is given the wedges will act to grip the cable, and it will be noted that by reason of the inclined surfaces of the wedges a simple movement will result in decided action in bringing the wedges together.
The construction, operation, and advantages will, it is thought, be understood from the foregoing description, and it will be understood that various changes may be made in the proportions and other details of construction without departing from the spirit of the invention.
Having fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
1. A gripping device consisting of a body having its upper edge inclined, in combination with a wedge riding thereon, and another wedge operating in conjunction with the first named, as and for the purpose described.
2. In a gripping device, a body having an inclined upper edge, a wedge riding thereon, links pivoted to the sides of the body and having slots formed therein, lugs formed on the wedge and riding in the slots, at second wedge operating in conjunction with the first, and a connection for the links for engaging the upper wedge, as'and for the purpose described.
3. In a gripping device, a body having side lugs and an inclined upper face, links pivoted to the lugs and having slots, a wedge riding on the inclined face and having lugs riding in the slots of the links, a connection for the ends of the links and a wedge engaged by the connection, as and for the purpose described.
In testimony whereof I aiiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
CARL L. KLEITZ.
