SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 507,887, dated October 31, 1893.
Application filed March 21, 1893- Serial No. 466.976- (No model.)
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, J OHN.O.DEAN, of Millsborough, in the county of Washington and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and Improved Cable-Grip, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description.
My invention relates to improvements in cable grips and especially to such as are adapted for use in connection with cable-propelled coal cars.
' The object of my invention is to produce an extremely simple and inexpensive grip which maybe easily applied to a car and cable, and
. which when applied to a cable, will grip the latter in such a way that it cannot accidentally become loose.
To these ends my inyention consists in certain features of construction and combinations of parts, as will be hereinafter described and claimed.
Reference is to be had to the accompanying drawings forming a part of this specification, in which similar figures of reference indicate corresponding parts in both the views.
Figure 1 is an end View of the grip and a cross section of the cable. Fig. 2 is a side elevation of the grip as applied to the cable.
The grip is provided with two oppositely arranged jaws which are hinged together at the top, as shown at 11, and which are grooved on their inner sides, as at 12, see Fig. 1, to enable them to grip firmly the cable 13. The grooves 12 are not quite semicircular but are contracted slightly in a vertical plane so as to cause them first to strike the top and bottom of the cable and thus squeeze the cable into them and hold them firmly. The jaws 10 have on their outer sides trunnions 14 which extend through and are pivotedin the short ends 15 of the levers 16, which levers are pivoted together and cross, as shown at 17, thus forming practically a pair of tongs, and when pressure is applied to force the outer ends of the levers or members 16 toward each other, the
short ends will also swing together, thus jamming the jaws firmly upon the cable. The
jaws are held to the levers by pins 14 which project through the trunnions 14, although other equivalent fastening devices may be used. The jaws 10 have their lower edges convex, as shown at 10 Fig. 2, thus enabling them to ride smoothly over trucks or other things along the line of the cable. Thelonger ends of the members 16 are normally drawn toward each other by a spiral spring 18 and this holds the jaws upon the cable so that they will retain their position, even when strain is not applied to the grip and to the vehicle drawn by it. The longer ends of the members 16 are connected by links 19 with a chain 20, which chain is adapted to be secured to a car, and it will be seen that the strain on the chain will have a tendency to pull the members or levers 16 toward each other, thus closing the jaws firmly upon the cable and this pressure will be increased with the increased weight of the car so that the grip will not slip.
Having thus described my invention, I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent- 1. A cable grip, comprising oppositely arranged grooved jaws hinged together and adapted to grip a cable, cross levers pivoted together and having their shorter ends pivoted to the jaws, and a drawing device connected to the longer ends of the levers, substantially as described.
2. A cable grip, comprising oppositely arranged grooved jaws hinged together and adapted to grip a cable, cross leverspivoted together and having their shorter ends pivotally connected with the jaws, and a draw chain connected by links with the longer ends of the levers, substantially as described.
