NITED STATES PATENT OFFICE,
JOSEPH HANSON, OF DERBY, ENGLAND, ASSIGNOR TO JOSEPH HILL, OE SAME PLACE.
HAULlNG CLIP OR GRlPER.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Application filed May 12, 1880.
To all whom ct may concern Be it known that I, JOSEPH HANSON, of Derby, in the county of Derby, in that part of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ira land called England, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ropeway Hauling Clips or Gripers and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the same.
The object of this invention is to construct a simple, cheap, and efficient device to clip or gripe wire and other ropes running for haulage, and especially applicable to endless ropes in motion; and it consists of'two side plates, one grooved to receive a rope laterally, and the other, of less depth, bolted thereto through intermediate blocks at. the upper corners, an
intervening wedge-sh aped draft-block supported by pins passing through inclined slots, and a lever fulcrunied between said plates en gag ing with the draft-block to slide it endwise, whereby the operation of the lever moves the draft-block inclinedly in and out of contact with the rope, and hauling power causes the draft-block to clampon the moving rope and thereby draw the load.
Figure l is a side elevation, and Fig. 2 a vertical section on the line or x.
A B are two side plates, held apart by intermediate blocks, 0 (J, bolted through the upper corners. The plate A is shaped to form a projection, A, along its lower edge, which pro jeetion is channeled or grooved to the size of the running rope D to be clamped. The plate B is of less depth than the plate A, to allow the rope to enter the groove laterally when the clip is placed on the rope.
The bottom faces of the blocks 0 O incline in line toward each other and form portions of an inclined plane.
E is a wedge-shaped draft-block, sliding between the side plates, A B, in contact with the inclined faces of blocks 0 O, and supported by pins a bearing in the plates A B, passing through slots F Fin the draft-block E, which Patent No. 232,890, dated October 5, 1880.
(No model.)
slots are parallel to its upper face. The lower face of the sliding draft-block is grooved to suit the size of the rope D, and it moves parallel to the grooved projection of the plate A.
Between the plates A B is fulcrumed a lever, G, having a projection from its lower end engaging in a recess, H, in the upper face of the block E, so that by movement of the le ver the block is moved endwise to depress it to clamp the rope or to raise it clear of the same. To the diminished end of the draftblock E is attached a clevis, J, or other suitable contrivance to connect a chain, K, or rope for attachment to the vehicle or load to be drawn.
To place the clip on the rope the lever is moved toward the load, thus raising the block E sufficient to admit the rope D laterally, and the block E is connected to the load by the draft-chain K.
When the load is to be moved the lever G is operated from the load to cause the block to gripe the rope and travel with it until the lever is moved in an opposite direction to raise the block clear of the rope, and in such condition the rope will run free, and, if desired, the clip can be removed from the rope.
1t will be seen that the heavier the load the tighter the clip will gripe the rope; hence the griping pressure is equal to the draft strain. .The griping pressure being straight, the rope will not be bent, and thereby be injured.
In the event of the lever meeting obstructions on the road the clip would become disengaged and the load stopped, thereby alleviatin g or preventing accident.
I claim as my invention- The grooved plates A B, bolted through intervenin g blocks 0 0, intermediate draft-block,
tially as set forth.
