CHECK FOR DRAFT APPARATUS.
Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom t may concer-n Be it known that l, ORLANDO F. BA'rTnr, a citizen of the United States, residing at Floydada, in the county of Floyd, State of Texas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Checks for Draft Apparatus; and l do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art t-o which it appertains to make and use the same.
This invention relates to check attachments for draft apparatus.
The object of the invention resides in the provision of a check attachment which may be readily associated with a draft apparatus and when so associated will permit the pull rope of the apparatus to be operated freely to effect the necessary draft upon the object being operated upon but which will automatically lock the pull rope against movement under the influence of the tension of the apparatus when the force applied to the rope to effect such tension is removed.
A further object of the invention resides in the provision of a check attachment of the character referred to which will be simple in construction, efficient in use, and which may be associated with facility and at small cost with any cable operated draft apparatus.
lith the above and other objects in view, the invention consists in the details of construction and in the arrangement and combination of parts to be hereinafter more ful v described and particularly pointed out in the appended claim.
In describing the invention in detail, reference will be had to the accompanying drawings wherein like charac-ters of reference denote corresponding parts in the several views, and in which- Figure l is a side elevation of a hoisting rigging having the improved checking attachment associated therewith, Fig. 2, a side elevation of the upper sheave of the hoisting rigging which carries the checking attachment., said attachment being shown in section with the parts thereof in inactive position with respect to the cable of the hoisting rigging, Fig. 3, a view similar to Fig. 2 with the parts of the attachment in active position or clamping relation to the cable of the rigging, F ig. 4, a section on the line H of Fig. 2, Fig. 5, a detail perspective view of the inner clamping element of the attachment, and Fig. 6, a detail perspective View of the outer clamping element of the attachment.
Referring to the drawings 10 indicates the upper or stationary sheave of the hoisting rigging, 11 the lower or movable sheave and 12 the cable of said rigging. Depending from the sheave 10 are a pair of spaced cars 18 and 14 which are connected at their free ends by a bolt. 15 extending across the space between said ears. Secured in the usual manner between the ears 18 and 14 to the bolt 15 is the cable 12 of the rigging. This cable is carried over the pulleys of the sheaves 10 and 11 in the usual and well kno-wn manner, the end of the cable remote from that secured to the bolt 15 passing over the pulley of the sheave 10 which is disposed in vertical alinement with the ears 13 and 14. This last named end of the cable 16 is then carried through the checking attachment as will hereinafter appear. y
The checking attachment comprises a U- shaped outer clamping member A including arms 17 and 18 and a bight portion 19. The free ends of the arms 17 and 18 are pivotally mounted on the bolt 15 exteriorly of the ears 13 and 14 respectively. These arms are also provided with corresponding longitudinal slots 2O and 21 respectively for a purpose that will presently appear. The attachment further includes a U-shaped inner clamping member B which comprises arms 22 and 23 and a bight portion 24. The free ends of the arms 22 and 23 are pivotally connected to the ears 13 vand 14 respectively at a point inward of the bolt 15 and the length of the member B is considerably less than the member A so that the latter may receive the member B without interfering engagement between the bight portions 19 and 24. Passing transversely through the arms 22 and 23 adjacent the bight portion 24 is a pin 25 whose terminals extend through and are slidable in the slots 2O and 21 respectively. The bight portion 24 of the member' B is curved inwardly, such curvature being opposite to that of the bight portion 19 so that said bight portions 24 and 19 form a passage through which extends the free end of the cable 1G.
In order to elevate the sheave 11 and the load carried thereby it is only necessary to pull downwardly on the free end of the cable 2 as is usual in hoisting riggings. Should it then be desired to support the load in elevation it is only necessary to draw the passage formed by the bight portions 24 and 19 so that said cable will friction sharply against the inner face of the bight portion 19. With the free end of the cable in this position the same is released to the tension ot the hoisting rigging and this tension as the result of the friction between the cable 12 and the inner tace of the bight portion 19 will move the tree end of the clamping member A toward the sheave 10. This movement of the clamping member A will in turn be transmitted to the clamping member B by reason of the engagement of t-he pin 25 in the slots 2O and 21. As the pivot of the member B is in advance of the pivot of the member A the bight portion 241- will move toward the bight portion 19 so as to securely clamp the rope against movement under the influence of the tension of the hoisting rigging. The intensity of the clamping action of the members A and B on the cable 12 will of course increase in proportion to any increase or load supported by the hoisting rigging. In order to release the cable 12 :trom the action of the checking action it is only necessary to exert a slight pull on the free end of said cable when the latter is disposed in alinement with the passage formed by the bight portions 24 and 19. This operation will draw the free ends of the members A and B away :trom the sheave 10 and enlarge the cross sectional area of said passage so as to permit the tree movement, of the cable therethrough.
"While the invention has been shown applied to a dra'tt apparatus adapted to operate vertically it will be apparent that same is equally applicable to a draft apparatus operating horizontally such as those used in stretching telephone wires. In the lastnamed type of draft apparatus the nut on the bolt 15 is screwed inwardly so as to friction the arms of the U-shaped member A against the ears 13 and 14. vWhen this frictional engagement exists the `U-shaped member A will not move to operate the device to locking position under the influence of slight engagement of the pull rope nor under the influence of its own weight.
.Vhat is claimed is:
In a checking attachment for dratt apparatns, the combination orp a support., a pair of spaced ears mounted on said support, a U-shaped member having the free ends of its arms pivotally connected with said ears respectively exterior-ly of the latter and having corresponding longitudinal slots in its arms respectively, a second U-shaped member having the free ends of its arms pivotally connected to said ears interiorly of the latter respectively at a point in spaced relation to the pivot of the first named member, said second named U-shaped member having its bight portion curved oppositely to the bight portion of the first named U-shaped member and forming in conjunction with the bight portion of the first named U- shaped member, a passage for a cable, a pin extending through the arms of the second named U-shaped member and engaging in the slots in the arms of the first named U- shaped member whereby the movement of one of said members in a given direction will effect a corresponding movement of the other member and move the bight portions of said members toward each other into clamping relation with a cable disposed therebetween.
