WILLIAM H. MGCARRY, OF PITTSFIELD, MASSACHUSETTS.
FOLDING BED.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented June a, 1912.
Application filed November 25, 1911. Serial No. 662,426.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, l/VILLIAM H. Mo- CARRY, a citizen of the United States, residing at Pittsfield, in the county of Berkshire and State of Massachusetts. have invented certain new and useful Improve ments in Folding Beds, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawing.
This invention relates to folding beds, and has for its object the production of a bed which may be easily and quickly drawn up against the wall and out of the way when so desired.
Another object of this invention is the production of an efficient folding bed wherein the same is provided with an adjustable shelf means whereby the shelf may be adjusted to accommodate the thickness of the mattress carried by the bed, so that the bed may be shielded by a curtain hung from the shelf.
l/Vith these and other objects in view this invention consists of certain novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described and claimed.
In the drawings :F igure 1 is a front view of the bed in its folded position. Fig. 2 is a central vertical section thereof. Fig. 3 is a detail perspective of one end of the bed showing the supporting means therefor. Fig. 4 is a detail perspective of one of the rods which swings the supporting foot to its operative and inoperative p0sition.
Referring to the drawings by numerals 1 designates the journal bracket which is provided with a laterally extending web 2 carrying a foot 8 which braces the bracket 1 against lateral movement. The bracket 1 is also provided with a plurality of laterally extending feet 4: having screws 5 passing therethrough for securing the bracket 1 to the floor. The bracket 1 is provided upon its upper end with an apertured upper end 6 in which is j ournaled the journal bolt 7 carried by the mattress frame 8. The end members of the frame 8 are turned upwardly as at 9 upon their rear ends for constituting a pocket for supporting the mattress which is adapted to be carried by the frame 8 when the bed is thrown up against the wall or in an inoperative position. The end members of the frame 8 are connected by the usual transverse rods 10,
the rear rod having a weight 11 placed thereon for facilitating the holding of a bed in an inoperative position when once swung to said position. Legs 12 are hinged to the forward end of the side members of the frame 8 and these legs are provided with laterally extending feet 18. A controlling rod 14 is pivoted to each of the supporting brackets l and has its opposite end pivoted to one of the legs 12. It will, therefore, be obvious by considering Fig. 2, that as the bed frame is swung upwardly to the position as shown in dotted lines the leg 12 will be folded in against the bed. The controlling rod 14 is secured to the inner face of the bracket 1 as illustrated in Figs. 2 and 3, and the upper end of the rod 14 is offset as at 15 to allow the rod to engage the inner face of the leg 12. As the bed is swung upwardly the same will be swung to one side of a vertical line taken through the pivot point of the lower end of the rod 14, thereby causing the rod 14 to firmly lock the leg 12 in its position. It will therefore be obvious that the rod 14 will have to be slightly bowed while the bed is being brought to its operative position in View of the fact that when the bed is folded up against the wall the leg will be looked, as stated above by the rod 14. The usual wire springs 16 are employed in connection with the bed having a central bracing portion 17 connected by the metallic strips 18.
The brackets 1 are provided upon their lower faces with sockets 19 in which sockets travel the lower ends of the shelf supporting rods 20. A shelf 21 is carried by the upper ends of the rods 20 and is braced by means of a diagonally extending brace 22 extending longitudinally of the shelf 21, and having its respective ends secured to the vertically extending rods 20. The shelf 21 is also braced by means of an auxiliarybrace 23 which extends at right angles to the brace 22 having a truss portion 24 extending transversely of the shelf 21. The lower ends of the shelf supporting rods 20 are provided with laterally extending lips 25 upon which is supported a shelf 26 which shelf is adapted to support any bed-clothing which might fall from the frame 8 when the bed is drawn up against the wall or to its inoperative position.
From the foregoing description, it will be obvious that a very efficient and durable folding bed has been produced which may be folded up against the wall thereby taking up the minimum amount of space when not in use. It will further be obvious that owing to the efficient construction of the leg operating rod, the leg will be automatically thrown to its operative and inoperative position when the bed is swung to its desired position.
Whatis claimed is A folding bed comprising supporting brackets having outwardly extending webs thereon and recesses in their lower faces, a
shelf, vertical rods carrying said shelf, lateral extensions on the lower ends of said rods adapted to adjustably engage said recesses and diagonal braces to support said shelf, asspecified.
In testimony whereof I hereunto affix my signature in presenceof two witnesses.
