Description
dinim! %tam patent emm.,
' CHARLES HAMILTON-ROBERTS,- OF GE EV 01110 Letters Patent 1\ `o. 102,7 13, dated May 3, 1870 The Schedule refen'ed to in these Letters Patet n making part of the same p struction and general ar'angcment of a'sohool-desk,
'such as will be he'einaf tor set forth.
In order to enable others skilled in the art to which my invention appertai's to make and use the same, I will now proceed to describe its Construction and operation, referringto' the annexed drawings, which represent a transverse vertical section of .my schooldesk. r
.A rcpresents the sides or frameoi' my desk, which are castin any suitablemanner, and Secured to the floor.
The back B connects the ides or ends A A, being secnred to them by screws' or other convenient means.
At the top of the desk is a'stationary strip, 0, provided with recess and grooves `for inkstands and pens.
The book-case D is provided with a hinged lid, E,- which forms the top of` the desk; and in the sides oi' the book-caseare two pins in each, which are inserted into two recesses, a and b, on the inner side of each end or side A, i
The pins rest in said recesses, so as to hold the hookease, with its lid, in the proper position to form, with the stationary strip O, the entire top of the desk.
From the recess a -to the 'ecess b is an inclined, groove, the recess a being Situated a little higher up than the one-b) and from the recess b, another g'roove leads, nt nearly right angles, down to a point, d. i
I By lifting up the outcr end of the book case, the pin in the recess b is allowed to .slide down the groove to d, and the pin in the recess a will move to the recess b, holding the book-case in a perpendicular, or 'nearly perpendieular, position.
When the book-case is turned down, a spring lateh',
e, placed in or under the stationary strip O, looks it,
and prereuts it from heingtturned up without first withdrawing the latch 6. This-latch maybe used with,
any folding desh-lid.
The seat Gis supported upon two bars or arms, H,.`
pive-red one on theinside of each side piece A.
The inner ends of these arms are cam-shaped, and, when the seat'is turned down, hear against lugs h,
cast on the side A, so as to hold the seat in proper' position.
Having thus fnlly described my inventiou,
V What I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, isi i 1. A folding 'desh-lid, provided on'each side with a pin or pins, in combination with standards A A, furnished with grooves a b and I d, arranged as herein shown and described.
2. A school-desh;consisting of standards A A, desk D E, spring latch e, foiding seat G H with lugs' h h, all constructed and aranged to ope'ate as described.
In testimony that I claim the foregoin., as my own, I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
i CHAS. H. ROBERTS.
Witnesses:
