DISPLAY DEVICE.

To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, JULIEN STRANDERS, a subject of the King of Great Britain, residing in New York, in the borough of Brooklyn, county of Kings, and State of New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Display Devices, of which the following is a specification.

This invention relates to display devices of that kind which are intended to be set up in show-windows in extended upright position from their folded or collapsed condition in which they are delivered to the exhibitor.

The object of the invention is to provide a display-device to illustrate and advertise articles of merchandise, and especially such which are sold in paper-boxes, bottles, tincans and the like, and which may be folded in a convenient shape for shipment and readily extended from the collapsed state into the operative state and locked quickly in position for use; and forthis purpose the invention consists of a display-device which comprises a continuous front-wall made integral with intermediate separating bands bet-ween the lower, intermediate and upper sections and with auxiliary pieces attached to the sections of-the front-wall and extending upwardly over the adjacent sections of the same, and a supporting-stay which is applied by a hinge-connection to the back of the lowermost section of the front-wall and provided with looking tongues or lugs, for interlocking with the intermediate connecting bands between the sections of the frontewall, and with an upwardly-extending end for supporting the uppermost section of the frontwall, the lugs of the stay engaging with transverse slots of the intermediate bands of the sections of the frontwall, as will be described hereinafter and finally pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings, Figure 1 represents a front-elevation of my improved display-device, Fig. 2 is a plan-view of Fig. 1, Fig. 3, a vertical transverse section on line 3, 3, Fig. 1, Fig. 4, a front-view of the display-device, shown in folded position, ready or packing and shipment, Fig. 5, a rearview of Fig. 4, and Fig. 6, a vertical trans verse section, on line 6, 6, Fig. 4.

, Referring to the drawings, a represents the front-wall of my improved display-device and b a stay which is hinged to the back of the lowermost section of the front-wall and preferably made of somewhat stronger and less expensive material than the frontwall. The front-wall a is made from one step-shaped blank which is divided by two transverse bands a, a into three sections a a, a, namely a lowermost, an intermediate and an upper section. The sections decrease in width from the lowermost to the uppermost section and are connected by the intermediate bands a, a which have inclined side-edges between the edges of the lowermost and intermediate sections and the intermediate and uppermost sections, as shown in Figs. 2, 4 and 6. On the faces of the different sections are placed representations of the articles of merchandise to be advertised by the display-device, while additional extension-pieces (Z, cl, (Z are arranged on the middle portions of the sections a a a said extension-pieces having also representations of the articles and extending above the intermediate and uppermost sections of the front-wall. The front-wall a is creased on the transverse connecting lines between the sections of the front-wall and the intermediate bands so as to permit the bands to be placed at right angles to the sections of the front-wall when it is desired to place them into proper position in the showwindows or other places of exhibition. The intermediate bands a, a are provided at their center-lines with transverse slots a which are placed into engagement with upwardly-extending lugs b, b of the stay 6 when the same is placed from a folded position along the back of the front-wall into the locking position at right angles to the same, the upper portion of the stay 6 being provided with an extension 6 having a straight inner edge for supporting the uppermost section of the front-wall, as shown clearly in Fig. 3. The extension-pieces cl, d, (Z of the sections of, a, a serve a threefold purpose: firstly, ofstiflening the sections against warping; secondly, of covering the projecting port-ions of the locking-lugs and the extension of the stay so that they are entirely out of sight when the display-device is placed in position for use; and thirdly, of imparting the desired pyramidal appearance to the display-device. When the inpieces, the

termediate bands I), Z2 are bent over on their crease-lines and the sections of the front-wall interlocked with the lugs of the stay, the display-device forms an attractive imitation of the articles to be advertised as grouped one on top of the other from a broader base toward a narrower top.

When the display-devices are to be shipped for delivery, they are packed up by folding the upper intermediate band downwardly between the intermediate and uppermost sections of the front-wall, as shown in Figs. 4 and 6, and then folding the stay over the thus folded front-wall into the position shown in Figs. 5 and 6. When required for use, the stay is turned into position at right angles to the front-wall, the front-wall extended in upward direction so as to bring its intermediate bands into position at right angles to the lowermost, intermediate and uppermost sections of the front-wall, and then pushing the intermediate bands into locking and holding connection with the lugs and upper end of the stay, as shown in Fig. 8. This requires but little time and places the display-device quickly from its folded or collapsed position into position for exhibiting the clifferent sections of the front-wall.

The advantages of my improved displaydevice are that it represents in its general configuration a pyramid in imitation of boxgoods placed on top of each other, and that the entire device consists of only two mainfront-wall with its intermediate connecting bands between the sections and the hinged stay, and in addition thereto of three extension-pieces at the middle portions of the front-sections so that the displaydevice can be made at a comparatively low cost, delivered in folded or collapsed state and extended into open or exhibition state in a very quick and convenient manner.

I claim:

1. A display-device adapted to simulate articles of merchandise, comprising a frontwall formed of a plurality of sections diminishing in width from the lower to the upper ends and intermediate bands bet-ween said sections, said bands being adapted to hinge on their meeting edges with the sections, extension-pieces on the individual sections of the front-wall projecting above the intermediate bands, a stay hinged to the back of the lowermost section and means for connecting said stay with the intermediate bands of the front-wall.

A display-device adapted to simulate articles of merchandise, comprising a frontwall, composed of sections and intermediate folding bands between said sections, said bands being provided with slots midway between their edges, extension-pieces on the individual sections of the front-wall and projecting above the intermediate bands, and a stay hinged to the back of the lowermost section and provided with lugs interlocking with the slots of the intermediate bands. 7

A display-device adapted to simulate articles of merchandise, comprising a plurality of sections diminishing in width from the lowermost toward the uppermost section and being spaced apart from each other, intermediate bands connecting said sections, said bands being adapted to be folded along their meeting edges with said sections, extension-pieces on the middle portions of said sections, and a supporting stay hinged to the lowermost section and provided with lugs engaging transverse slots of the intermediate bands and an upwardlyextending portion for supporting the upper-' 7 most section of the front-wall.

4:. A display-device adapted to simulate articles of merchandise, comprising a frontwall formed of a plurality of sections diminishing in width from the lower to the upper ends, intermediate bands between said sections, said bands being adapted to hinge on their meeting edges with said sections, a stay hinged to the back of the lowermost section, and means for connecting said stay witlh the intermediate bands of the frontwa l.
