Description

W. A. CALLANAN.
FASTENING DEVICE.
APPLICATION FILED MAY 13, 1911.
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
7121mm /2 CaZZana/m for hanging UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
WILLIAM A. CALLANAN, 0F DENVER, COLORADO.
ras'rmtmc DEVICE.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I. ,WILLIAM A. GALLA- NAN, a citizen of the United States, residing at Denver, in the county of Denver and State of Colorado, have invented new and useful Improvements in Fastening Devices, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to certain novel and useful improvements in fastening devices, and has particular application to a device pictures, picture frames, and the like. i
In carrying out my invention, it is my purpose to provide simple, cheap and eflicient means which may be readily attached to a picture and then to the wall for securing said picture in position.
Still a further object of my invention is to provide a picture fastener embodying in its construction a screw member and a pin connected therewith, the shanks of the screw and pin projecting in opposite directions, whereby the screw may be attached to the back of the picture or picture frame and the pin embedded in the wall so that the picture will be hung in its properly tilted position.
VVit-h the above-recited objects and others of a similar nature in view, the invention consists in the construction, combination and arrangement of parts set forth in and falling within the scope of the appended claim.
In the accompanying drawing :-Figure 1 is a view in side elevation, showing the manner of securing the picture to the wall, said wall being shown in section. Fig. 2 is a back view of the picture with the device fastened thereto. Fig. 3 is a view in side elevation of the device. Fig. 4 is an end view.
Referring now to the accompanying drawing in detail, the letter A indicates the wall to which the picture or picture frame is to be hung, and the letter B designates the picture frame.
My device which is shown in detail in Fig. 3, comprises a screw shank 5 having a sharpening point 6 and a head which is Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed May 13, 1911.
Serial No. 626,901.
formed of two members 7-7, each member comprising a strip of metal doubled or bent upon itself, the ends overlapping as at 8 and each end being provided with an aperture 9 designed to aline when one end is folded over the other so that the said ends form a passage for the sharp shank 10 of the pin 11, the head 12 of said pin lying in the head of the screw and bearing against the top of the shank, as is shown in Fig. 3.
In employing my invention, the point of the screw is embedded in the soft wood of the picture frame or the back of the picture,
Patented Apr. 16, 1912.
and by giving the screw a few turns may be firmly secured therein. The sharp pin is then embedded in the wall in the usual manner, so that the picture will be hung, as is illustrated in Fig. 1.
By the use of my fastening device the picture may be firmly secured to the wall and at the same time the proper outward tilt may be imparted to such picture.
In presenting a device of this character, it is one of my purposes to provide a device which may be manufactured cheaply, in great quantities, and which will form a substitute for the cumbersome, unsightly picture wires now commonly employed for hanging pictures. Furthermore, my device will be found especially useful for hanging small photographs, pictures, and the like upon the wall. In the drawing, I have shown one manner of connecting the pin to the head of the screw, but I wish it to be understood that I do not limit myself to this particular arrangement, as the pin may be connected to the screw head in any preferred manner. It will further be noted that when the picture is to be removed from the wall, the pin may be withdrawn without pulling the fastener out from the back of the picture or picture frame.
The shank of the pin which is to pene trate the wall or other backing is preferably slightly bent or inclined at an angle from the horizontal so as to enable the device to more securely engage with the wall than would be the case were the s'hankof the pin extended in a directhorizontsl plane.
Having thus described the invention, I claim A device of the class described comprising a. threaded shank member having a sharpened point, and a head formed of two strips doubled upon themselves and having alining openingsin the end, and a pin provided with a head and havin the shank 1 thereof projecting outwardly t rough said openings. In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
