PICTURE HANGER Filed Feb. 1, 1946 FIG. 2.
awe/whom HELEN B. PETERS,
Patented Oct. 24, 1950 UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE PICTURE HANGER Helen B. Peters, Tulsa, Okla.
Application February 1, 1946, Serial No. 644,935
1 Claim.
This invention relates to supports, and more particularly to a supporting device for hanging pictures, picture frames, and the like.
A main object of this invention is to provide a novel and improved supporting device of extremely simple construction which is very inexpensive to manufacture and is easy to use.
A further object of the invention is to provide an improved supporting device for securing picture frames and the like to plaster walls, said device being adapted to support the frame at a desired angle on a wall and being further adapted to be readily detached from the wall whereby the frame may be positioned at a new location on the wall, a minimum of time and effort being required in the process.
Further objects and advantages of the invention will become apparent from the following description and claim, and from the accompanying drawing, wherein:
Figure l is a side elevational view of a picture frame supporting device according to the present invention.
Figure 2 is a front elevational view of the supporting device of Figure 1.
Figure 3 is a perspective view of the supporting device of Figure 1.
Referring to the drawing, 11 designates the body portion of the supporting device, said body portion comprising a strip of metal, such as brass strip, aluminum strip, or the like, bent at I2 to form a first ply l3 and a second ply 14, said second ply [4 being further bent at l5, l6 and 17 to form a downwardly inclined double-ply arm I8. Rigidily secured between the plies of arm l8 and projecting through an opening formed therefor at bend I6 is a sharp, slender, tapered needlelike prong l9 which extends rearwardly in the central longitudinal plane of the device and in the same downwardly inclined direction as arm Body portion 1 l is formed with openings 20, 20, adjacent its to and bottom edges through which appropriate fastening members, such as screws or the like, are adapted to pass to secure said body portion to a vertical frame element. In hanging a picture frame or other object of the same general nature, a pair of supporting devices such as described herein are employed one device being secured to the object at each side of the rear surface or to each of the rear vertical frame elements thereof. The object is then hung on a plaster wall by gently pressing the needle-like prongs into the plaster, said prongs penetrating the plaster to a substantial depth without breaking or seriously marring the plaster adjacent the regions of penetration due to the very small cross section of the prongs. Due to the downward inclination of the prongs with respect to the main portion of the supporting device, the weight of the supported object will provide a substantial force component in the direction of the prongs tending to maintain said prongs embedded in the plaster. The object may be given any desired inclination or pitch with respect to the wall by suitably locating the support devices on the rear surface thereof.
To remove the object from the wall it is merely gently pulled in the direction opposite to the direction of penetration of prongs 19. After removal it may be readily positioned at a new location on the wall in accordance with the procedure above described.
While a specific embodiment of a supporting device for picture frames or other like objects has been disclosed in the foregoing description, it will be understood that various modifications within the spirit of the invention may occur to those skilled in the art. Therefore it is intended that no limitations be placed on the invention other than as defined by the scope of the appended claim.
What is claimed is:
An article of manufactur for use as a picture hanging clip comprising a strip of material bent to form a double thickness vertical member and and outwardly and downwardly projecting double thickness protruding member on one side thereof, said protruding member having a tapered needle-like prong permanently secured between the thicknesses thereof, the pointed end of the prong extending outwardly from the outer end of the projection, said vertical member having a horizontal aperture at the upper and lower end thereof.
