To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, THOMAS ELs'UM, a citizen of the United States, residing at Newark, in the county of Essex and State of New Jersey, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Skate-Runner Sharpeners; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to characters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.

The presentinvention relates, generally, to improvements in sharpening tools; and, the invention has reference, more particularly, to a novel construction of skate-sharpener.

The present invention has for its principal object to provide a simple, cheap, and efficient device for sharpening the runners of skates, and similar articles, the same comprising a means for burnishing and turning the edges of skate-runners, and the like, to provide the same with properly sharpened edges, so that the runner will properly cut into the ice in a manner to prevent lateral slipping or sliding of the skate.

With the various objects of this invention in view, the said invention consists, pri marily, in the novel construction of skatesharpener hereinafter set forth.

The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, in which Fi ure l is the side elevation of a skate, illustrating in connection therewith, the novel construction of skate-sharpener and the manner of applying the same to the skate-runner to sharpen the latter. Fig. 2 is a large detail transverse section of the skate-runner, with the novel construction of skate-sharpener applied thereto, and illustrating the manner of performing its sharpening function. Fig. 3 is a large detail cross-section of the same, said section being taken on line 3-3 in said Fig. 2. Fig. f is a central longitudinal section of the said sharpening device, the same being removed from the skate-runner.

Similar characters of reference are employed in all of the hereinabove described views, to indicate corresponding parts.

Referring now to the said drawings, the

reference-character 1 indicates a skate provided with the usual skate-runnen 2.

The referencecharacter 3 indicates the novel construction of skate-sharpener made according to and embodying the principles of the present invention, the same comprising a body-portion 4: forming a handle which is provided with a rectangular opening 5 which constitutes a key or wrench adapted to be applied to the squared heads 6 of the skate clan'lp-operatinp screws 7, to manipulate the respective clamp-devices 8, as will be clearly evident. Connected with the said body-portion L of the skate-sharpener and key 3 is a bifurcated head 9, the same providing a V-shaped opening 10, and the edges of which are preferably curved or rounded, so as to provide the burnishing or sharpening surfaces 11. Said bifurcated head 9 is further provided with guidefingers or projections 12 which turn inwardly toward each other, and which are located at the opening or mouth of said V-shaped opening 10.

The manner of using the novel skatesharpener is as follows: The bifurcated head 9 is slipped or slid upon the skaterunner 2, so that the edge of the runner 2 is registered within and engaged by the burnishing or sharpening surfaces 11 of said V- shaped opening 10, while, at the same time, said guide-fingers or projections 12 engage the sides of the body of said skate-runner 2, in the manner shown in Fig. 2 of the draw.- ings, thereby preventin any lateral move ment of the device amaining the burnishing or sharpening suraces 11 in proper relation to the respective bottom edges of the skate-runner. The skate-sharpener is then drawn longitudinally along the length of the skate-runner, while at the same time, the operator exerts a firm pressure upon the tool to maintain the burnishing or sharpening surfaces 11 in their operative contact with the skate-runner. As said burnishing or sharpening surfaces 11 are thus drawn along the skate-runner, they remove any outwardly projecting curl or edge from the runner, and tend to turn inwardly and toward each other the respective edges of the runner, thereby producing the inwardly turned or projecting sharp edges 13, as shown in Fig. 2 of the drawings, and thereby providing a means whereby the skate-runner is caused to firmly grip the ice and move longitudinally upon the surface thereof, Without any tendency to lateral slipping or sliding. The guide-fingers or projections 12, in their engagement with the sides of said skate runner, maintain the position of said V-shaped opening 10, and the burnishing or sharpening surfaces provided thereby, with relation to the runner of the skate, whereby the edges of said skate-runner are turned and sharpened in a uniform manner, so that the same are properly alined and are properly paralleled with each other; and, furthermore, no slipping of the tool is possible during the sharpening operation, whereby any gouging or nicking of the edges of the skaterunner is prevented.

It will be understood, that my present invention provides a very simple and effective tool for the purpose hereinabove stated, and one which can be easily and quickly operated to maintain in good condition the skate-runner, maintaining its so called hollow ground condition much longer than can otherwise be done.

I claim 1. A skate-sharpener comprising a bodyportion provided with a bifurcated head forming a substantially V-shaped opening providing burnishing or sharpening surfaces, and a pair of guide-fingers or projections located at the mouth of said V-shaped opening.

2. A skate-sharpener comprising a bodyportion provided with a bifurcated head forming a substantially V-shaped opening providing burnishing or sharpening surfaces.
