Description

(No Model.) V Q I. GASSIDY.
NAIL FILE FOR TOILET USE.
No. 448,409. Patented Mar. 17,1891.
UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
ISABEL CASSIDY, OF NElV YORK, N. Y., ASSIGNOR TO THE LONDON TOILET BAZAR COMPANY, OF SAME PLACE.
NAIL-FILE FOR TOILET USE.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 448,409, dated March 1'7, 1891. Application filed August 30, 1890. Serial No. 363,501. (No model.)
T at whom it may concern.-
Be it known that 1, IsABEL CAssIDY, a citizen of the United States, residing at New York city, in the county of New York and State of 5 New York, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Nail-Files for Toilet Use; and I do declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the [0 art to which it appertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, and to the letters of reference marked thereon, which form a part of this specification.
I 5 This invention relates to certain new and useful improvements in tools for use in connection with manicure outfits, the especial object being to provide a nail-file which shall incorporate in a single tool a file having both a con'caved and convex file-surface, the tip of the file being formed of bone, ivory, or other like suitable material, the use of which will not be liable'to result in injury either to the ,nails or to the finger-tips. The use of sharppointed tools of iron, steel, or other hard metal in the treatment of finger-nails has been found to be objectionable, in that such use has frequently resulted in injury and sometimes to serious poisoning of the fingertips from the rust which is liable to form upon the metal point of the instrument. It has also been found that in order to readily and perfectly trim or form the end of the nail the use of a file having both a convex 3 5 and a concaved file-surface is necessary.
The essential object of the present invention is to incorporate within a single instrument a nail-file which will obviate the objections above noted, which will present a file- 0 blade having both a concaved and a convex surface, and which will be provided with a tip or point of bone or ivory.
To this end and to such others as the invention may pertain the same consists in the 5 peculiar construction and novel arrangement of parts, all as more fully hereinafter described, and shown in the accompanying drawings.
The invention is clearly illustrated in the accompanying drawings, which, With the let- 5o ters of reference marked thereon, form a part of this specification, and in which drawings Figure l is a perspective View of a nail-file embodying my improvements. Fig. 2 is a similar view, in which the point is shown as detached but in its relative position.
Reference now being had to the details of the drawings by letter, A designates the file, which is provided with a suitable handle B, of any size, shape, or material adapted to the purpose. The blade or body portion 0 of the file is bent upon an arc of a circle, and is pro vided upon its outer or convex face with a filesurface a, and upon its concave face with a similar file-surface b. At its free end the fileblade is cut off at right angles to the length of the blade, and the end is provided with a screw-threaded extension E, adapted to e11- gage the screw-threaded opening F, formed in the base of the tip or point G, which tip is made of either bone, ivory, or other material the use of which would not be likely to injure either the nails or the finger-tips operated upon.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim to be new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-
As an improved article of manufacture, the herein-described nail-file, composed of the met-allic blade A and integral handle 13, said blade being curved and having its faces and convex and concave edges formed with filesurfaces, those upon the edge projecting from the faces thereof and the end formed centrally with projecting screw-threaded extension E, and a tapered ivory tip G, having screw-threaded opening F to receive said extension, said tip completing the cont-our of the edges and faces of the blade, substantially as shown and described.
In testimony whereof I afiix my signature in presence of two witnesses.
ISABEL oAssIDY.
