' At the-head and foot of this bedstead is placed a cross-Slat, B, on which to rest the bed-bottom.
On the cross-slats B B along each side of the bedstead is placed a wooden spring Slat, C, which supports the bed-bottom.
' The two outside sla-ts D D of the bed-bottom propel' are thicker-than the others, so as not to spring up.
Between these thick side slats D D and slat 'springs O O are placed coiled wire springs E E EsE. Rubber springs may be used instead. The bearings of the spring slats C C at the ends are covered with rubber, to prevent squeaking.-
A series 'of'wooden slats, F F, extending lengthwise of the bed, is secured at each end between cross-slats G G by means of bolts a a.
If the slats F F should sag, after long using, the four bolts which fasten the ends of the thick slats D D to the cross-slats G G may be removed, the thick slats taken from between `Gr G, and the bed-bottom turned4 over. This may be done as oftenA as necessary, to secure a level bed.
The spring slats C O may be strengthened by bolting to each a cross-Slat, H, 'at the middle.
I I are stays. B B are two and a half inches wide and. one inch thick.
O C are three and a halt` inches wide and one inch thick.
D D are two and a halt' inches wide and vone and a half inch thick.
F F are six inches wide and five-eighths inch thick.
G G are three inches wide and one inch thick.
The length and width of bed-bottom may vary according to size of bedstead.
I do not claim, broadly, side springs or longitudinal spring slats, as I am well aware that they have long been in use but What I claim as my invention, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is-l v v The spring bed -'bottom, consisting of the coiled springs E, spring slats O, stays I I, slats D and F, and cross-piece H, all combined and arranged to operate as herein described and shown.
