Description

waited Stima atc-1d gdlrr,
t GEORGE O; OAPEN, OE PROVIDENOE, RHODE ISLAND, ASSIeNoE, BY- MESNE ASSIGNMENT, 'ro` STEPHEN A. BANNER, OEV SAME PLAOE.
Lette/rs Patent No. 103,138, dated May 17, 1870.
IIMIEROVEED SPRING BED-BQTTOM.
'.lheI Schedule' referred to in Lh'ese Letters Patent and making part of the saine To all whom 'it may concern Be it known that I, GEORGE O. OAPEN, of the city and county of Providenceand State of Rhode Island, have Vinvented a new and Improved SpringBed-Bottom and I do hereby declare that the following is a full, clear, and exact description of the saine, reference being had to' the accompanying drawings -making part of this speciticatijon, in vwhich-y Figure lis a vvertical section of a bedstead/ with my improved spring bottom and Figure 2 is a plan vof thesamc.
Similar letters indicate corresponding the iigures. Y
My invention consists of' a set of slats upon two crossipieces at their ends, and two long side springs in combination, said side `:springs `being secured `near their middle tothe sides of the` bedstead-frame, with the parts in .all
tf1-ee 'ends extending each way toward the head and foot of the bed, upon which ends rest the two crosspieoes which 'support the slatsorbottom upon which the mattress rests. i n the said drawings* `is the-frame ofthe bedstead, the two side pieces being'ma'rked F2.
'.lo the latter are attached, upon thev inside, two
spring piecesm m, by screws or bolts a d, fig.` 1.
These springs may be either of woodor metab'but -I preferito make them of some springy wood, such as ash, hickory, or otherlkind. l
,l'lhe springs of either taper from the portion near the middle, where theyare secured, to-their' ends, and an additional support' may be employed at the middle by a blockof wood, E, screwed or` bolted-firmlyio sagging.
the side piece Ffto prevent the spring body of 'the Occupantof' the bed stiffer, and capable ot' supporting'the greater weight vthan the lower eX- tremities of `the body.. Y
The slats,.o r bottom frame, D D, of the bedstead are supported upon the two cross-pieces G G,- at each end thereof', to which they may be secured by pins e c, &c. The two ends of the crosspeces rest upon the free ends of the' springs in fm, so' that this entire frame is subjected to the elastic action of these springs.
A bed-bottoni thus constructed, besides the extreme elasticity which is derived from the unusual range ot' action of the longl springs fm m, is cheap, durable, and cleanly, and can readily be made by the most ordinary wood workman.
'Having described my invention,
What'I claim, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is v 'lhe two` side springs m. m, having their ends free in space, in combination with the bottom frame D D, and its cross-pieces G G, the latter resting on the free ends of thesprings, substantially as shown and described.
In testimonyfwhereof I have hereunto subscribed my name this 19th day'of October, 1869.
GEO. O. GAPEN.
