FIGURE TOY.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Mar. 5, 1912.
Application filed September 25, 1911. Serial No. 651,013.
To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, JAMES HURsoN, a
citizen of the United States, residing at Bigbend, in the county of Pennington and State of South Dakota, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Figure Toys, of which the following is a specification, reference being had to the accompanying drawings.
This invention relates to improvements in figure toys and particularly to that class known as gymnasts or acrobats.
The invention has for its object to construct a toy of this type wherein the figure thereof will execute and assume many ludicrous positions.
Other objects of the invention will become apparent as it is more fully set forth.
In the accompanying drawings; Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device; Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view on line 2-2 of Fig. 1, and Fig. 3 is a detail perspective view of the horizontal supporting rod.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 1 designates a pair of spaced and normally vertical bars, said bars being held in their spaced relation by a horizontally arranged bar 2, the same being secured between the bars 1 by passing screws 8 therethrough and into the opposite ends of the horizontal bar, whereby the bars 1 when pressed together at their lower ends will spread the upper ends to actuate the figure 4.
The figure4 consists of a trunk 5, the lower extremity of which is provided with a pair of spaced slots 6. Passing through suitable openings in the lower extremity of the trunk 5 is a pin 7 to which is pivotally connected the upper ends of the links 8. The links 8 are provided with eyes 9 at their upper ends and by which the same are pivotally connected to the pin 7 The lower ends of the links 8 are also formed with eyes 10. The leg members 11 are each provided with a slot 12 in which the eyes 10 of the links 8 are positioned. Pins 13 are passed through the legs 11 to engage through the eyes 10 of the links 8, whereby the leg members 11 are pivot-ally connected to said links. The shoulder portion of the trunk 5 is provided with a transverse perforation 14. The arms 15 of the figure are formed from a single length of wire, the same being bent into U- shaped form, the bight portion of which is loosely pivoted in the perforation 14. The outer ends of the arms 15 are welded or otherwise suitably secured intermediate the ends of the horizontal rod 16, the opposite ends of which are looped to form a pair of oppositely disposed eyes 17 Passing through the eyes 17 are cords 18 said cords being crossed, and are secured to the upper ends of the bars 1, so that by press ing upon the lower ends of the bars 1 the upper ends thereof are spread apart, which causes the cords to straighten out, which action necessarily changes the position of the figure 4, so that ludicrous antics will be performed thereby.
By the peculiar manner of hingedly connecting the arm and leg members to the trunk of the figure 4, a garment, grotesque in character may be applied to the figure, and by the peculiarly arranged joints of the figure 4, it will not during its antics twist the garment at the armpits, whereby said garment will fit the figure loosely and at no point bind, which would necessarily retard the movement of the figure. v
Having thus described the invention, I claim 1. A toy of the class described, comprising a pair of uprights, said uprights being spaced by a horizontally arranged bar, in combination with a jointed figure adapted for operation by said bars, the arms of said figure being rigidly connected to a horizontal rod, the opposite ends of which are formed to produce a pair of oppositely disposed eyes, cords passed through said eyes and secured to the upper end of the bars, whereby when the lower ends of the said bars are pressed together the upper ends of said bars will be spread apart to untwist said cords, whereby the figure is operated.
2. In a toy of the class described, the combination with a pair of parallel spaced bars, of a figure consisting of a trunk having slots formed in the lower extremity thereof, a pair of leg members also having slots formed therein, links having their upper and lower ends pivotally connected in the respective slots, a perforation formed in the shoulder portion of the trunk, a single length of wire passed through said perforations and constituting arms for the figure, said arms being rigidly connected to a horizontal rod, the opposite ends of which are s0 bent as .to form a pair of oppositely dis- In testimony whereof I hereu'nto afii-X my posed eyes, cords secured to the upper end slgnat-ure 1n the presence of two wltnesses. of: each vertlcal bar, sald cords be1ng twisted and passed through'sztid eyes, wvhere- JAMES I-IURSON. 5 by When the lower ends of the vertical .bars Witnesses:
are pressed together the upper ends thereof JOHN RosKos,
are spread apart to eoperatethe figure. V A. EMERIOK.
