To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FRANK E. LYON, a citizen of the United States, residing at Elmira, in the county of Chemung and State of New York, have invented new and useful Improvements in Toys, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to toy gymnasts of that class in which the puppets consist each of a body and limbs loosely hinged together and suspended by twisted cords in such a manner in a loosely jointed frame that by varying the strain on the said cords the puppets are caused to gyrate. And the object of the invention is to provide a toy of this character which is extremely simple and cheap in construction comprising a frame having a plurality of equally spaced upstanding arms between which the puppets are suspended and whereby when motion is imparted to the end arms the cords suspending the puppets between the intermediate arms will be drawn to cause all the puppets upon the frame to gyrate in unison.
With these and other objects in view the invention resides in the novel construction and combination of parts hereinafter fully described and claimed.
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the device. Fig. 2 is a detail sectional view illustrating a method of connecting the crossbar 3 with the side bars 2. Fig. 3 is a detail side elevation of this feature of the device.
In the drawings the numeral 1 designates the frame. This frame 1 comprises the side bars 2 and the intermediate longitudinal connecting bar 3. The side bars 2 are loosely connected to the intermediate bar 3 so as to allow a sufficient amount of give to these bars when the toy is operated.
Loosely secured to the connecting bar 3, is a plurality of vertically extending bars 41, and these bars 4 together with the side bars 2 are provided near their upper ends with cut away portions or recesses, extending around the perimeter of the bars and adapted to receive the twisted cords 5 secured to the puppets 6. The puppets 6 each comprise abody portion having arms and legs loosely pivoted thereto, and the ams of these puppets are provided each with spaced openings, through which the cords 5 are threaded. It is to be noted that each of the puppets 6 is rovided with a separate endless cord 5 and t e cords are of a length when twisted equaling the distance between the projecting bars of the frame 1. By providing each of the puppets 6 with a separate cord 5, it will be noted, any number of the puppets desired may be positioned upon the frame. Rigidly secured to the connecting bar 3, and rojecting downwardly therefrom a suitable distance from the sidebars 2 are the bars 7.
In operating the toy, the bars 7 and 2 nearest each other are grasped by both of the hands of the operator and by varying the pressure between the bars the strain upon the cords 5 will cause the puppets 6 to gyrate, the side bars 2 through the medium of the cords 5 secured thereto imparting motion to the intermediate bars 4, thus causing the gyration of all the puppets upon the frame.
By reference to Figs. 2 and 3 of the drawing it will be noted that I have provided the.
side bars 2 with inclined slots 9, communicating with an arcuate cut-away portion 8 whereby the headed pintle 10 may be positioned so as to allow the said side bars to be moved without interfering with said pintle %)0 as-motion is imparted to the said side ars.
Having thus fully described the invention what is claimed as new is:
In combination, a pair of side arms, a bar loosely connected with the arms and approximately central thereof, a pair of rigidly secured arms depending from the connecting bar, loosely connected arms extending'from the connecting bar, one of the extending arms being positioned approximately central of the rigid depending arms, the other arms being each positioned between one of the rigid depending arms and the loosely connected side arms, and puppets each provided with a twisted flexible member having its ends engaging the upper portions of the loosely connected side arms and the loosely connected extending arms.
