TOY.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 606,955, dated July 5, 1898.
Application filed May 27, 1897. erial No. 638,425. (No model.)
To aZZ whom it may concern:
Be it known that I, FREDERICK WV. BAB- BIDGE, of Rockland, in the county of Knox and State of Maine, have invented certain new and useful-Improvements in Toys; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.
My invention relates to improvements in toys, and has for its object the production of a simple and novel construction of toy gymnast- To this end my invention consists in a toy comprising ahandle consisting of two sections connected by a spring-hinge and a toy or puppet connected with the said handle-sections by means of jointed connecting-rods, the construction being such that when the handles are forced apart and closed by the spring hinge the connecting-rods are moved back and forth, with the result that the puppet is caused to perform various gymnastic exercises. V
In the accompanying drawings, Figure l is a side-elevation view showing the device closed. Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the same in open position.
Like numerals of reference designate corresponding parts throughout both views.
Referring to the drawings, the numeral 1 designates the toy, which is provided with a handle consisting of two sections 2 3, having their lower ends flared or spread outward in opposite directions at 4 to serve as a grasp portion to fit within the palm or hollow of the hand. The two handle-sections are connected by a wire spring-hinge 5, having a central coil 6, having position on a line between the two sections, and two oppositely-projecting arms 7 8, connected, respectively, with the two handle-sections. Thisspringserves normally to pivot or hinge the two handle-sections together to allow them to be spread apart and by its spring tension cause said sections to fold together.
The puppet or figure 9 is provided with hinged limbs, and the arms 10 thereof are connected with the free end of a rod 11, pivoted to the upper end of the handle-sections 3. The inner end of this rod is jointed to a link or short rod 12, which has its inner end jointed to the upper end of the handle-section 3.
A device thus constructed is calculated to afford considerable amusement by the various gymnastic exercises of the figure or puppet; By spreading the handle-sections apart the jointed rods carrying the puppet will be caused to swing and the figure or puppet to swing with them and to assume various positions, this action also taking place when the handle-sections are released and permitted to be folded by the spring-hinge connecting them. I
My invention provides a simple toy adapted for amusement, and it may be manufactured at a small cost.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to'secure by Letters Patent, is
1. A toy of the character described comprising a handle formed of two substantially parallel sections pivotally connected and provided with diverging handle portions, apuppet or figure, a rod connected with and carrying said puppet and pivoted intermediate its ends to one of said sections, and a link jointed at one end to the other section and at its other end to the inner end of said puppetcarrying rod, substantially as described.
2. A toy of the character described, comprising a handle formed of two pivotally-connected, parallel blades or sections having their lower ends flaring in opposite directions to constitute a hand-grasp, a spring-hinge connecting said sections, a figure or puppet, and a jointed link connection between the said puppet and the outer ends of the pivotally-connected sections, substantially as described.
3. A toy of the character described, comprising two pivotally-connected sections having their lower ends flaring or bent in 'opposite directions to constitute a hand-grasp, a spring-hinge connecting said sections and having a central coilarranged on a line between said sections and oppositely-projecting arms engaging the opposing sections, a figure or puppet, arod carrying the figure or pup- In testimony whereof I have signed this pet, said rod being pivotally connected at a, specification in the presence of two subscribpoint intermediate its ends with the upper ing Witnesses.
end of one section, and alink having one end FRED. XV. BABBIDGE. 5 jointed to the upper end of the other section Vitnesses:
and its opposite end jointed to one end of the A. S. LITTLEFIELD,
said rod, substantially as described. C. E. LITTLEFIELD.
