THE NORRIS PETERS 00.. PHmLlma. wAsumcTon n c UNITED STATES PATENT OFFICE.
SAMUEL T. JOHNSON, OF vWICHITA, KANSAS.
CLOTHES-PIN.
SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent N 0. 534,562, dated February 19, 1895.
Application filed December 22, 1893 Serial No. 494.459. (No model.)
To all whom it may concern.-
Be it known that I, SAMUEL T. JOHNSON, a citizen of the United States of America, residing at \Vichita, in the county of Sedgwick and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Wire Clothes- Pins, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein to the accompanying drawings, and the letters of reference thereon, forming a part of this specification, in which Figure 1, is a perspective view of the clothes-pin; Fig. 2, a side view of the same looking thereat lengthwise of the line upon which it is placed, and Fig. 3, is a cross-sectional view on line 1-1 of Fig. 2, looking down.
This invention relates to certain improvements in wire clothes pins; and consists in the novel construction thereof, which improvements are fully set forth and explained in the following specification and pointed out in the claim. I
Referring to the drawings the pin comprises the arms B, B, and O, 0, connected by the curved terminals G, G, the loop D connect-.
ing the upper terminals of arms 0, O, and bent at, or about at, right angles to said arms and brought between the upper portion of arms B, B, and the eyes, or finger pieces R, R, of the upper terminals of arms B, B, which are formed by coiling or curving the wire ends. By reason of such construction, or formation, of the wire, from which the pin is made, the loop D serves as a fulcrum against which the arms B, B, bear, and the branches of said loop serve as torsional springs to yieldingly hold arms 0, 0 toward each other at their lower end, and by reason of curved connections G, G, likewise hold arms B, B, and thereby yieldingly hold the eyes,'or finger operated with them. The lower terminal portion of arms B, B, and O, O, are, at the curved connections G, G, curved outward, or apart, as represented, to provide a V shaped entrance between said pairs of arms.
In use the pin is grasped with the eyes, or finger pieces, R, R, between the thumb and finger, when by a pressure on said finger pieces they are forced toward each other which action causes arms B, B, and C, O, to be moved from each other, and in such position the pin is placed with the said arms astride a clothes line; which line is represented at W, and when thus placed upon a clothes-line the loop D comes to rest upon the line, and the arms come together and clamp the fabric articles below the line.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and useful, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is as follows:
The herein described wire clothes-pin, comprising the arms O, O, yieldingly connected at their upper end by means of the laterally bentloop portion D, the arms B, B, connected, at their lower end with said former'arms, by means of the curved terminal connections G, G, and brought tobear, at oppositesides, against said loop portion,- and the finger pieces R, R, formed from the upper terminal portions of said lateral arms, substantiallyas set forth.
SAMUEL T. JOHNSON.
