To all whom it may concern:
Be it known that we, ALEX B. JOHNSON and CHARLES L. JOHNSON, citizens of the United States, residing at Baker city, in the county of Baker and State of Oregon, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Document-Files, of which the following is a specification.
This invention relates to an improved filing device, and refers particularly to a device for holding documents, and the like, in bundles.
An object of this invention is to provide a holder for papers, books, and many other objects adaptable to the holder, which may be quickly applied to the articles and which may be adjustably positioned thereabout so as to hold the papers and the like tightly in bundles which are of different thicknesses.
For a full understanding of the invention reference is to be had to the following description and accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 is a perspective view of the improved file as applied to a bundle. Fig. 2 is a longitudinal central section through the same. Fig. 3 is an end View showing the detachable connector. Fig. 1 is a detail sectional view of the chain.
Corresponding and like parts are referred to in the following description and indicated in all the views of the accompanying drawing by the same reference characters.
Referring to the drawing the numeral 10 designates a lower engaging member formed of a rectangular wire frame which is relatively narrow and provided at its ends with offset loops 11. The upper engaging member 12 is of similar form, the same being preferably reduced in width, and is provided with outwardly extending and upturned lips 13. The lips 13 are located midway of the longitudinal edges and upon the ends of the upper engaging member 12 so as to register vertically with the offset loops 11.
The engaging members 10 and 12 are secured together by a fixed connector 14: engaging at its opposite extremities upon the adjacent ends of the engaging members 10 and 12, while the opposite ends of the members 10 and 12 are provided with a detachable connector 15. The connectors lt and 15 are each formed of a plurality of spaced links 16 secured in hinged relation to one another by clips 17. The clips 17 are each Specification of Letters Patent.

formed of a strip of metal which is looped through the links 16 and having its ends overlapping, as is disclosed in Fig. 4. The links are of such a size as to loosely receive the lips 13 therethrough when securing the engaging members 10 and 12 against the opposite sides of a bundle 18.
In applying the file holder to the bundle 18, the engaging members 10 and 12 are positioned across the opposite sides of the bundle and midway of its ends. The fixed connector 14: is adjusted by looping the connector to position one of the links 16 over the lip 13 and to draw the adjacent ends of the engaging members 10 and 12 taut. The opposite end of the engaging member 12 is now pressed downwardly toward the registering end of the member 10, and the de tachable connector 15 is secured upon the lip 13. As the links 16 are open links the connectors 14 and 15 can be very easily adju'sted to space the engaging members 10 and 12 apart as desired.
This improved file holder may be madein various sizes to ace mmodate documents of various dimensions, ooks and other articles which may be placed in bundles. The crossbars at the ends of the upper engaging member 12 are arched upwardly to space the lips 13 above the plane of the member 12 to effect the yielding of the same during compression.
Having thus described the invention what is claimed as new is 1. A file holder comprising a frame including spaced sides and connecting ends, said ends being vertically offset at their intermediate portions to form loops, a second frame including spaced sides and ends, the ends of the last mentioned frame being bowed upwardly and offset at their intermediate portions to form loops projecting outwardly in the direction of the length of the frame, connection between the loops at one end of the frames, an adjustable connection between the loops at the other end of the frames, the latter connection comprising a chain having one of its end links permanently attached to the said loop of the first mentioned frame and its other links interchangeably engageable over the said loop of the second mentioned frame.
2. A file holder comprising a frame including spaced sides and connecting ends, the said ends being vertically offset at their necting ends, the ends of the last mentioned intermediate portions to form loops, a sec- V spaced apart a greater distance than the 0nd frame including spaced sides and consides of the second mentioned frame.
