application filed. august 5, 1916. Serial No. 1.133%.
To all whom it com-em:
Be it lmown tat ll, LomslE. Larson, a citizen of the United States, residing at Forty Fort, in the county of Luzerne and State of Pennsylvania, have invented a new and useful Holder for Ironing-Board (Jovers, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention relates to a holder for application to ironing boards to retain the covers thereon, and the invention has for its object the provision of a quickly and easily detachable holder adapted to retain covers on ironin boards, and to thus obviate the necessity o tacking or stitching the covers in place.
The resent invention accomplishes the above 0 ject by the provision of a pair of rods joined at their opposite ends by a pair of springs, the rods and springs fitting in a marginal groove in the ironing board out of the way, and from contact with surrounding objects. The edge of the ironing board is notched to permit the grasping-of the holder, and covers of mucus thicknesses ma be clamped by the holder.
he invention will be best understood from a consideration of the following detailed description, taken in connection with the accompanying drawing forming part of this specification, with the further understanding that while the drawing shows a practical form of the invention, the latter is not confined to strict conformity with the showing of the drawing, but may be changed and modified, so long as such changes and modifications come within the scope of the appended claim.
In the drawing Figure 1 is a side elevation of an ironing board having the holder of this invention applied thereto, the dotted lines showing the holder partly released from the cover and ironing board.
Fig. 2 is a horizontal sectional View, through the board on the line 22 of Fig. 1, showing the holder in place and a clamping cover over the ironing board.
Fig. 3 is a cross section, taken on the line 3-3 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 4: is a fragmentary perspective view of the wide end of the ironlng board, showing the attachment applied thereto, and showing the marginal notch to permit grasp- 1|. g of the holder.
ig. 5 is a similar view of the narrow end of the ironing board with the holder applied thereto, and showing the hinged connection between the holder and the ironin board.
Referring to the drawing, an ironing board of any which may be mounted on a suitable stand 11, as shown. The ironing board is provided with a cover 12, of any suitable material, and of any desired thickness or number of layers. The ironing board 10 is provided with a marginal groove 13 extending entirely thereabout.
A pair of rods 14: are fitted against the opposite lateral edges of the ironing board 10, conform to the longitudinal curvature of the said edges, and extend substantially throughout the entire length of the ironing board. These rods 14 fit into the marginal groove 13 and crimp the depending edge of the cover 12 into the groove to draw the cover taut over the upper side of the ironing board, and clamp the cover in such position.
Springs 15 and 16 connect the opposite ends of the rods l i together to form therewitha substantially rectangular frame for yieldlngly holding the rods and the springs against the edge of the cover and in the groove 13. A staple 17, or the like, is secured, preferably, about the spring 15 and into the adjacent end of the ironing board 10 to hingedly connect the clamping frame to the end of the ironing board.
A. notch 18 is formed in the opposite edge of the ironing board 10. The spring 16 bridges the notch 18, as shown in Figs. 2 and l, and the notch receives the fingers for grasplng the spring 16 when it is desired to release the clamping frame from the ironing board.
The clamping frame of this invention is 10 designates approved type,
permanently attached to the ironing board and cannot be lost therefrom. The frame may be expanded out of the groove 13., and may then be swung either upwardly as shown in dotted lines in Fig. l, or downwardly from the ironing board 10 to permit the removal and replacement of the cover 12. The springs 15 and 16 at the opposite ends of the ironing board admit of the application of the holder to ironing boards of different sizes, and which vary in width from end to end.
It is, of course, understood that the holder of this invention may be applied to ironing boards which are of various other configuralltl tions than that shown in the accompanying drawing, the springs 16 being flexible and conforming to different shaped ends of the ironing boards.
What is claimed is The combmation wlth an ironing board having a continuous marginal groove throughout the side and end edges, and also provided with a notch in one end intersecting the groove, and a cover fitted over the board and hangin over the grooved marginal edge thereo of a removable holder comprising a pair of rigid rods shaped correspondingly to the contour of the side edges of the board and extended a major portion of their length to lie in the grooves therein, coiled retractile springs connected to the ends of said rods and engaged in the grooves in the end edges of the board, one of said springs bridging the' notch to permit free gripping of a portion thereof without the roove, and means connecting the other sprlng to the board, for the swinging of the holder as a unit to clamping and unclamping positions, the holder being adapted to expand over and contract the cover into the marginal roove to hold it taut over the upper side oi the board when the holder is in clamping position.
In testimony that I claim the foregoing as my own, I have hereto aiiixed my signature in the presence of two witnesses.
LOUIS EMIL LANGE.
