To all whom it may concern:

Be'it known that I, ARTHUR E.,BE1\' ETT, a citizen of the United States, residing at Garnett, in the county of Anderson and State of Kansas, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Adjusting Means for Trousers, of which the following is a specification, reference being had therein'to the accompanying drawing.

This invention relates to devices for fastening the waist of trousers and has a special reference to such devices used with trousers to be worn without suspenders. V

The invention has for its object to. provide an improved construction of trousers-where in the waist of the trousers may be adjustably tightened and fastened.

The invention consists of an improvement in trousers and in fastening means for ad justably tightening and fastening the waist of the trousers, constructed and arranged as hereinafter set forth and claimed.

Referring to the accompanying drawings:Figure 1 is a side view of the upper port-ion of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with this invention and showing the waist unfastened. Fig. 2 is a view similar to Fig. 1 showing the trousers fastened at the waist. Fig. 3 is a View of the trousers shown in Figs. 1 and 2 turned inside out. Fig. 4 is a modification of the flap portions of the waist of the trousers showing means for adjustably fastening the inside of the waist of the trousers.

1 indicates the upper portion of a pair of trousers constructed in accordance with this invention, said trousers instead of being made with flaps in front are made with the flaps at the side. In this construction the trousers, at each side thereof, are divided at the seam downwardly for a short distance from the waist line, such division forming the overlapping flaps 2 and 3. The flap 2 which is turned over in Fig. 1 is provided with a suitable strap and as here shown preferably with a strap having a narrow slender portion 4 and a broad rear portion 5, which is stitched to the flap 2 and, by reason of its breadth, serves to securely hold the strap in place and prevent it from being pulled or torn away from the flap 2. In connection with the strap there is provided a suitable fastening device, as for example,

the buckle 6 which is located on the outside of the waist portion of the trousers a little to the rear of the vertical seam thereof and,

as here shown, is fastened to the trousers by means of a folded strip 6 sewed to the trousers.

In order to retain the strap in place and prevent it from being accidentally pulled out of the buckle 6 and also to prevent it from becoming loose by'rubbing against objects or by the accidental movement of the hand against the same in a vertical direction, a suitableguard is provided for the strap'and as here shown consisting of a loop or strap 7 located adjacent to the buckle, between it and the flap 3. In fastening the waist of the trousers, the strap is pushed through the loop 7 and engages with the buckle 6 and is thereby held snugly against the outside of the waist of the trousers, so as not to be caught in any thing and pulled out of place. This loop or guard 7 is an extra loop in addition to the usual loops 8 provided on trousers for the use of the.belt.

' In addition to the strap guard and buckle, trousers, according to this invention, are also provided with means for adjustably tightening and fastening the waist of the trousers on the inside. Such means consisting of a reinforcing strip 9 which is formed of a folded piece of material stitched to the inside of the trousers, and to the inside of the flap 3 and terminating at the outer end of the flap 3 in a pear shaped end 10 to which is secured a pair of hooks 11 having sharp points, whereby they may be engaged with the inner side of the waist of the trousers as shown in Fig. 3. By this means not only may the trousers be adjustably fastened on the outside by the tongue or strap engaging the buckle 6 but also may be adjustably tightened and fastened on the inside by means of the hooks 11. It will be seen that by means of the hooks 11 the trousers may be first adjustably tightened and fastened on the inside of the waist band and then may be fastened on the outside by the strap engaging the buckle.

The advantages of this invention are two fold, the tightening and adjustment of the trousers on the inside may be made at any point by reason of the hooks 11 and then the trousers may be adjustably fastened on the outside by means of the strap and buckle.

In the modification shown in Fig. 4 the flap 3 is omitted, the split at the side seam of the trousers being formed with an inner straight vertical edge. To this edge is secured by sewing or other suitable means a short flap 12 provided with the pair of hooks 11 which are adapted to engage the inner side of the waist of the trousers. By this means trousers cut in the ordinary way with a vertical split side may be provided with a flap 12 having the hooks 11.

It will be seen that by means of this invention retailers selling clothes will be saved the expense of altering the waists of trousers when the size that happens to be with the coat at the time is too large or too small. For with trousers constructed in accordance with this invention if the trousers the customer desires is a 31 waist and his measure is 28 then the adjustment may be made without altering the trousers, and so also if his measure happens to be 3i and the trousers were 31 waist the adjustment could be made without alteration.

Having described the invention I claim A pair of trousers of the character described formed with a split at the waist line at each side thereof, and formed at that point with a pair of overlapping flaps, a reinforcing strip attached to the inner side of the inner flap and extending to the end thereof, hooks on said inner flap for engagement with the inner side of the waist of said trousers, a buckle secured to the trousers adjacent said split, and a strap secured to the outer overlapping flap, said strap being widened at its secured end to provide, a larger securing surface and tapering toward its free end, and adapted to be fastened to said buckle.
