SASH-HOLDER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Application filed April 24. 1911.
Patented Jan. 16,1912.
Serial No. 622,923.
To all whom it may concern.
Be it known that I, ONESIME RoUssnAU, citizen of the United States, residing at Detroit, county of Wayne, State of Michigan, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Sash-Holders, and declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the same, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it pertains to make and use the same, reference being had to the accompanying drawings, which form a part of this specification.
This invention relates to sash holders.
It has for its object an improved sash holding device adapted to be secured to the upper rail of a window sash and to engage against the side surface of the side rail on an adjacent sash, and to hold the two sashes in a relatively fixed position.
In the drawings :-Figure 1, shows th rails on the upper and lower sashes in cross section with the device aflixed to the upper rail of the lower sash. Fig. 2, shows the device in perspective. Fig. 3, is a plan View showing the location of the device on the end of the upper rail of the lower sash.
The device consists of an anchoring plate 1 fixed to the lower sash with clamping plate. 2 in hinged relation to the anchoring plate 1; a screw projects from the lower member through a passage in the hinged member and is provided with a thumb nut by which the relative angle of the hinged pieces may be controlled and the end of the clamping plate may be forcibly held against the side rail of the upper sash. The anchoring plate 1 has a tabular part 8 adapted to engage across the upper surface of the sash rail 4. From the tabular part hangs an in clined engaging member 5 supporting a bracket 6 that engages against the lower surface of the sash rail 41. A hanger 7 extends from the elbow of the bracket 6 to a position, which, in the located device, is vertically under the elbow between the tablet member 3 and the engaging member 5. The hanger 7 has a bearing surface to engage against the side rail 8 of the upper sash. The clamping plate 2 is pivotally connected by a hinged connection with-the anchoring plate 1. The tablet portion 3 of the anchoring plate 1 is at the outside surface of the top of the meeting rail of the lower sash inclined upward. gives the screw 10 a pitch backward and the length of the clamping plate is so calculated that when the cushion 11 contacts with the stile of the upper sash the plate is substantially parallel with the inclined portion of the tablet 8, and the screw 10 is therefore substantially at right angles to the clamping plate 2. This gives the thumb screw 12 a full bearing upon the clamping plate 2. On the screw 10 is run a thumb nut or knurled nut 12 by means of which any desired pressure may be given to the cushion, bearing against the upper sash. The flat spring 14 serves to cause the clamping plate 2 to follow the thumb nut 12 when the same is run outward on the screw 10. The device is fastened to the rail 4 by screws 13 and as thus constructed is adapted to present a very long bearing contact to the upper sash or a contact made at two parts widely spaced and a variable bearing point against the same surface at the end of the hinged member 2; because of this long bearing the de vice itself is not disturbed in its relation of security to the lower sash, and produces a string bearing pressure against the upper sas The device as shown can be used either with or without the screws 13 as it will hold itself securely in place because of the long bearing against the outer sash, and the engagement of the bracket 6 against the under surface of the upper rail of the lower sash. The hanger and lower part of the member may, if desired, be removed by cutting through at the upper elbow in which case the cross member or tabular part3 must necessarily be secured to the upper sash by the screws 13. The entire structure used without the screws is a portable device.
Vhat I claim is -1. A combined sash holder and sash fastener having in combination an anchoring plate, a clamping plate hinged thereto, and having on its free end a soft frictional mate rial, a screw fastened to the anchoring plate and passed through the clamping plate, a thumb nut running on said screw and adapted to press the free end of the clamping plate into frictional engagement with the sash, and means for causing the clamping plate to follow the thumb nut, substantially as described. v
2. 'A sash-holder, having in combination on anchoring plate comprising a tablet portion adapted to rest on the upper surface of the meeting rail of the lower sash, a web portion extending in continuation of said tablet portion about the outside of said meeting rail as an engaging member thence bent for Withdrawing said clamping plate there- 10 under the overhang of the said meeting rail from, substantially as described.
over the stile of the lower sash and from In testimony whereof, Isign this specificathere bent into the form of a hanger having tion in the presence of tWo Witnesses.
a broad surface bearing against the stile of the upper sash, a clamping plate connected ONESIME ROUSSEAU. to said anchoring plate, and means for cansing said clamping plate to frictionally engage against the stile of the upper sash, and
