APPARATUS FOR LIGHTING FIRES.
- Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Jan. 16, 1912.
Application filed October 31, 1910. Serial No. 589,993.
To all whom it may concern Be it known that I, VALENTIN Nnrr, a subject of German Emperor, and resident of No. 16 Wiesenstrasse, Glatz, Germany, foreman, have invented'certain new and useful Improvements in Apparatus for Lighting Fires, of which the following is a specification.
The present invention has for its object an apparatus intended to facilitate the lighting of the coal on the grates of furnaces or other fires and which is especially useful in the case of chimneys which do not draw well since by its aid the fires can be most easily started.
An example of the invention is shown in the attached drawings in which:
Figure 1 is a sectional View of the apparatus positioned on the grate of a furnace; Fig. 2 is a plan of the same.
When the fire is to be lighted, the apparatus is placed on the front of .the grate,
said apparatus being composed of a sheet iron box 1, open at the bottom and on one of its sides, the open side faces into the furnace or fireplace, so as to force the air coming in from underneath to pass out through the space between the cover 2 and the tank 4: which last contains an easily inflammable liquid combustible. This tank takes the whole width of the apparatus and is furnished with a sheet of metal 3 which goes down to the bottom of the tank 4 along all its length and is made to rise from the same in a curved shoulder, as shown in Fig. 1. Fixed on the lower part of the sheet 3 and in the interior of the tank 4 are a number of partitions 5 which divide said tank into a quantity of small compartments; these compartments are filled with an incombustible and porous material, such as asbestos. Furthermore, the sheet 3 carries in its central part a quantity of perforations such as 6 which gives a free passage to the air from the other side of the plate 3.
To use the apparatus, the tank 4L is filled with gasolene or petroleum, this fuel is lighted and the apparatus placed in the grate. The combustion of the gasolene heats the metal plate 3 which in its turn heats all the partitions 5 thus greatly facilitating the vaporizing of the liquid fuel. A strong draft is quickly created and a very strong flame obtained sufficient to light the coal.
I claim:
An apparatus for lighting fires, comprising in combination a sheet iron box open at the bottom and along one of its sides, a transverse receptacle at the open side, a sheet of metal in said receptacle conveniently bent outward toward the top of the box, transverse partitions upon said sheet forming compartments in said receptacle, and asbestos in said compartments, substantially as described and shown and for the purpose set forth.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand in the presence of two witnesses.
VALENTIN NEFF.
Witnesses.
