Specification of Letters Patent.

To all whom it 'may concern.'

Be it known that I, CLARE W. SHARROW, a citizen of the United States, residing at Philadelphia, in the county of Philadelphia. and State of Pennsylvania, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Hair-Cutting Gages, of which the following is a specification.

My invention relates to improvements in hair cutting gages, the object of the invention being to provide a device of this character which is especially adapted to be positioned on the head of a child to guide the barber in blocking the hair.

It is an extremely difficult matter for a barber to gage with his eye, so as to block the hair in a straight line, and at the eXact height desired.

My improved gage is adapted to be adjusted to fit various sizes of heads, and various lengths of cut desired, so that it may be adjusted and positioned in accordance with the wishes of the parties, and then accurately guide the barber in cutting the hair.

With these and other objects in view, the invention consists in certain novel features of construction and combinations and arrangements of parts, as will be more fully hereinafter described and pointed out in the claims.

In the accompanying drawings: Figure l, is a view in elevation illustrating my improvements, in operative position. Fig. 2, is a front elevation. Fig. 3, isa top plan view on an enlarged scale. Fig. 4f, is a fragmentary rear end view. Fig. 5, is a view in section on the line 5 5 of Fig. 3, and Fig. 6, is a view in section on the line 6 6 of Fig. 3.

My improved device comprises a U-shaped spring 1 around which a sheet metal band 2 is positioned. Band 2 is provided adjacent its ends with slots 3, through which screws 4 fixed to spring 1 project, and thumb nuts 5 are positioned on these screws to clamp the spring and the band at various relative adjustments. ToV further adjust the band with relation to the spring, said band is provided with an elongated slot 6 in its rear, and at the base of said slot, a perforated ear 7 is formed, in which the lower end of a screw-threaded rod 8 is swiveled. This rod 8 passes through a screw-threaded opening 9 in an ear 10 on spring 1, and at its upper end is made square as shown at 11 for the reception of a wrench or key to turn the same. By turning this screw, band 2 will be adjusted relative to the spring as will be readily understood. Upwardly projecting and inwardly curving plates 12 are secured to spring"1 near its forward ends, and these plates are adapted to bear against the side of the head. To these plates, curved spring bands `13 are pivotally connected by rivets 14:, and are adapted to be positioned around the forehead of the user with the ends overlapping as shown in Fig. 3.

By reference particularly to Fig. 1, it will be seen how the device is positioned on a childs head, and by loosening nuts 5, and moving the band 2 by means of the screw 8, the band may be elevated or lowered to adjust therheight desired, and the hair may be cut along the lower edge of band 2 so as to be perfectly straight and at the desired elevation. The bands 13 guide the barber in cutting the bangs, so that they may be perfectly straight. With this device it may be determined at a glance just how the hair is to be blocked, and then the cutting operation may quickly and accurately be done.

Various slight changes might be made in the general form and arrangement of parts described without departing from my invention, and hence I do not limit myself to the precise details set forth, but consider myself at liberty to make such changes and alterations as fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the appended claims.

Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Let-- ters Patent is:

1. A device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band, and means for securing said band at various vertical adjustments relative to the spring, substantially as described.

2. A device of thetcharacter described, comprising a. head clamping spring adapted to be positioned horizontally on the head, and a band of greater width than the spring positioned over the spring, and means for securing said band at various vertical adjustments relative to the spring, substantially as described.

3. A device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band around the spring, said band having slots, clamping devices projecting respectively through two of the slots and connected to thev spring, and means connecting the spring and band whereby they may be adjusted relative to each other, substantially as described. i

4. A device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band around the spring, said band having slots, clamping devices projecting respectively through two ofthe slots and connected to the spring, a perforated ear on said band, an ea-r on said spring projecting through a slot in the band, and having a screw-threaded opening therein, and a screw-threaded rod swiveled in said first-mentioned ear and engaging the threads in the opening of the lastmentioned ear, substantially as described.

5. A device of the character described, comprising a. spring head clamping band, head clamping plates secured to said spring band, and spring bands pivotally secured to said plates and adapted lto. be positioned around the forehead to gage the cutting of the bangs, substantially as described.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band adjustable thereon, head clamping plates secured to said spring, and spring bands pivotally secured to said plates and adapted to be positioned around the forehead to gage the cutting of the ba-ngs, substantially as described.

7. A- device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band around the spring, said band having slots, clamping devices projecting respectively through two of the slots and connected to the spring, means connecting the spring and band whereby they may be adjusted relative to each other, head clamping plates secured to said spring, and spring bands pivotally secured to said plates and adapted to be positioned around the forehead to gage the cutting of the bangs, substantially as described.

8.'A device of the character described, comprising a head clamping spring, a band around the spring, said band having slots, clamping devices project-ing respectively through two of the slots and connectedto the spring, a perforated ear on said band, an ear on said spring projecting'through a slot in the band, and having a screw -threaded opening therein, a screw-threaded rod swiveled in said first-mentioned ear and engaging the threads in t-he opening of the lastmentioned ear, head clamping plates secured to said spring, and spring bands pivotally. secured to said plates and adapted to be positioned around the forehead to gage the cutting of the bangs, substantially as described.

9. As a new article of manufacture, a hair cutting gage comprising supporting means adapted to engage the head, a guide adapted to be positioned around the head, said guide adjustable on the supporting means, and means connected to said supporting means and adapted to be positioned around the forehead of the customer, substantially as described.

10.,As a new article of manufacture, a hair cutting guide comprising means for supporting the same on the head, and a guide band vertically adjustable on said means, substantially as described.

l1. As a new article of manufacture, a hair cutting gage comprising a support to engage the head, and guides connected to said support and adapted to guide the cutting of the bangs and the back hair respectively, substantially as described.
