UnitedStates Patent ABSTRACT OF THE DISCLOSURE Good grooming not only calls for a clean shave but neat shaving and trimming of ones hair adjacent and in front of the ears. For the person who Wears sideburnswhich can belong, short, or mediumit is important to equalize the length of each sideburn and, if desired, to
trim the lower edge so that it Will be even, Whether straight across or intentionally slanted. The device shown serves as a sideburn measuring device and its primary function is to measure the length of left and right sideburns. It comprises two simple manually usable componentparts, namely, an adapter and. a complemental length measuring slide adjustably mounted on theadapter.
This invention relates to certain new and highly useful improvements in a readily applicable and removable self-contained special purpose device which lends itself to use by an individual or, alternatively, his barber, which can be used with equal success on right and left sideburns and has the capability of accurately measuring the length of sideburns so that they can be evened and equalized.
The herein shown sideburn measuring device is susceptible of simplified practical use by men of all ages. It should be acceptable for use by men who shave and desire to maintain their sideburns at a desired length. It is such in construction that the small ruler-like slide can be rapidly but aptly adjusted, set, and frictionally retained for easy-to-achieve results. It is feasible for uncomplicated barber shop use and will no doubt please customers who desire to watch their sideburns being masured for uniform length. Since it is quick and easy to use, the aver-age barber would endorse and use it. Then, too, it is small and can be inserted into the barbers coat pocket, similar to pocketing a comb.
The accepted fact that heads, haircut styles and sideburns, if any, vary greatly suggests that gages'and measuring devices must comply for acceptable used with evervarying requirements. The present invention is expressly designed and uniquely adapted for diversified usefulness. To the ends desired, the user can set the straight-edged adapter or templet at the angle desired to slant the trimmed lower edge of a sideburn or level it for straight across cut at will. The mere use of two component parts, an adapter and a companion slide, plus the measuring lines on the slide insures good results, provides a novelly useful end product, and enables one to style and keep his sideburns rat the level most suitable for his individualizedneeds.
Briefly, the preferred embodiment of the invention is that which is hereinshown and hereinafter specifically describedt One of the two component parts is, described as a relatively small ruler-like slide. The other part is re ferred to broadly as a complemental adapter in that it adapts itself to adjustably supporting the slide. More explicitly, the adapter comprises an elongated flanged strip member which is fashioned into a templet. The templet has median slots to accommodate the slide.-The slide is generally T-shaped and the stem portion ofthe T is shiftably slidable through the slots and is provided on 'ice.
its viewable face with graduated measuring lines. The head of the T isabove the slotted portion of the adapter and provides a suitable limit stop and finger-grip; i
define not onlytthestem of the .T butllhave a tendency to.
In carrying out the invention the it slide is preferably fashioned from a length of metal or plastic material which is bent upon itself intermediate its respective ends in a manner to provide two opposed legs. These legs spring apart from each other and in this manner to yieldmeasuring needs These together .withhother objects and advantages which will become su-bsequentlyapparent reside in the details ofconstrutcion and operation as more fully hereinafter described and claimed, reference being had to the accompanying drawings forming a part hereof, wherein like numerals refer to like parts throughout, and in which:
FIG. 1 is a view in perspective of a measuring device for sideburns constructed in accordance with the principles of the present invention. p
FIG. 2 is a view in elevation of the same butlooking at the rearward or inward side.
FIG. 3 is a central vertical sectional view through either FIG. 1 or FIG. 2 as the case may be.
And FIG. 4 is a view on a smaller scale showing .th device and one manner in which it is held and used and how, under certain circumstances, the safety razor is positioned to trim the sideburn shown.
It will be evident that this simple and practical twopart sideburn measuring device can be made of bendable sheet metal, commercial plastics of a desired grade in keeping with the manufacturing, stocking and packaging requirements. For convenience it will be assumed that the device shown is made of appropriate noncorrodible metal. The first part referred to as the adapter is denoted by the numeral 6 and the companion or complemental part referr d to as the measuring slide is denoted by the numeral 8.
The adapter 6 is also designated as a templet inasmuch as it lends itself to layout and planning use in the manner shown in FIGURE 4. This adapter or templet is here shown, for example, in the form of a flat-faced strip of metal whose front face is denoted at 10. The strip is elongated and one end portion is denoted at 12 and, the other end portion at 14. The upper and lower lengthwise or marginal edges are bent upon themselves to define straight elongated bends and turned in flanges. The upper bend defines a first or upper straight-edge as at 16. The
8. It will be noted that the slide is substantially T-shaped in elevation and provides a depending part referred to as the stem of the T as at 26 and a crosshead 28. More specifically. this slide is made up of a length of metal which is bent upon itself intermediate its ends as a 30 to define a pair of legs 32 and 34. These legs have an inherent tendency to spread. apartand when. the two legs are passed through the slots 24 the then existing stem is yieldingly and; frictionally'retainedin any set or given po-' sition. It will be further noted that the stem of the T has its front or.viewable face provided with graduated spaced parellel measuring lines which are denoted at 36. These lines coordinate with each other and with the straight edges 16 and 18 and facilitate the step of adjusting the T-shaped slide up or downin whatever man- 1 ,ner required and dependingon the length (short, median and long) of the sideburn.
Patented J an. 27, 1970 3 The construction of the component parts 6 and 8 which provide the desired templet and slide respectively is clearly evident from FIGURES 1 to 3 inclusive. One manner in which the device can be and preferably is held and used it shown in FIG. 4. Ordinarily the individual would hold and use the over-all device and razor in the relationship illustrated in FIGURE 4. On the other hand the device can be used by a barber at which time the barber would resort to his own practice and technique (not shown) in either measuring or measuring and trimming simultaneously as desired. The device can also be used (not shown) from the bottom of the ear, with the top of the T used for long sideburns.
Usually, but not necessarily, the lower straight-edge 18 of the end portion 14 is caused to reside or rest atop the ear whereupon the adapter can be held in a substantially horizontal plane. At the same time it is possible to rock it either up or down to obtain the desired level or to cause the extreme lower edge of the slide to slope or slant in a manner and for the purposes desired.
The foregoing is considered as illustrative only of the principles of the invention. Further, since numerous modifications and changes will readily occur to those skilled in the art, it is not desired to limit the invention to the exact construction and operation shown and described, and accordingly all suitable modifications and equivalents may be resorted to, falling within the scope of the invention.
What is claimed as new is as follows:
