SPECIFICATION forming part of Letters Patent No. 782,769, dated February 14, 1905.

To all whom it may concern:

Be 'it known that I, HENRY LoUIs WALLACH, a citizen of the United States, residing at Oshkosh, in the county of Winnebago and State of Wisconsin, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Ear-Muffs; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear,

' and exact description of theinvention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to improvements in ear-protectors, and more particularly to that type known to the art as ear-muffs.

The object of the invention is to improve the construction of a muff or protector which is adjustably retained in a hat.

Another object of the invention is to improve the construction of an adjustable muff which is provided with means for retaining the same in an adjusted attached position to the inner portion of the crown of a hat.

A still further object of the invention is to provide stationary means adapted to receive a muff-carrying means and locking means secured upon said stationary means for retaining said muff-carrying means in an adjusted position.

With these and other objects in view the invention consists in certain other novel constructions, combinations, and arrangements of parts, as will be hereinafter fully described, illustrated in the accompanying drawings, and more particularly pointed out in the claims hereto appended.

In the drawings, Figure 1 is a perspective view of a hat to which is secured a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, said device being shown in side elevation. Fig. 2 is an end view in elevation of the present invention. Fig. 3 is a fragmentary view of a device constructed in accordance with the present invention, part of which is shown in section. Fig. 4 is a transverse sectional View of another embodiment of the present invention.

It will be obvious from the description hereinafter set forth that devices constructed in accordance with the present invention may be attached to either high or low crowned hats, caps, and ladies bonnets or hats.

The muff and its fastening device comprise a frame 8, which is preferably constructed of wire, which is looped and secured at 4 by means of soldering or any other means to the lever member 5. Said member 5 is preferably constructed from suitable flexible metallic material which permits of a slight resilient action of the member when in operation, whether it is moved to the position shown in full lines in Fig. l or to the position 6, depicted in dotted lines. It will be apparent from the disclosure, Fig. 2, that the lever member 5 is preferably formed of a thin sheet of metallic material; but it will be obvious that other constructions may be resorted to without departing from thespirit and scope of the present invention.

A stationary casing 7, preferably constructed of metallic material, is provided with an eye or opening 8, which extends throughout the length of easing 7 and is adapted to receive lever 5 and permit the same to be adjusted vertically or longitudinally through the easing. The stationary surrounding casing 7 is preferably constructed rectangular in shape; but the shape thereof'will be entirely optional with the constructor of the devices, such shape being governed according to the variations of the construction of the member 5. At right angles to the eye or opening 8 an auxiliary opening 9 is formed in the casing 7 for the purpose of receiving a cam member 10, which is rigidly secured to clamp 11. Upon considering the drawings, Fig. 3, it will be seen that opening 9 is provided with an inner beveled edge which is of greater width at 12 than upon its opposite edge 13. By this construction it will be seen that when clamp 11 is in a position illustrated in the drawings, Figs. 2 and 3,the cam 14, formed upon cam member 10, will be projected, by means of the beveled edge formed upon opening 9, to an engaging position with adjustable lever 5. When it is desired to adjust the lever 5 within the stationary casing 7, this may be accomplished by removing the clamp 11 from engagement with hand 2 and turning the same upon its pivot until the cam-head 14 is removed from engagement with the side of lever member 5.

In the'embodiment shown in Fig. 4 clamp 11 j is preferably secured by means of a rivet 15 f to a metallic casing 7. The spring member l 5 is adjustably retained within the eye or opening 8 by means of bent or crimped portion 16, which is normally in engagement with one side of member 5, thereby forming a brake for limiting the free movement of member 5 when mounted within the casing 7. In this construction it is not necessary for the adjustment of the m ufl' to remove the clamp 11 from band 2, as it will be obvious that vertical and longitudinal adjustment of lever 5 can be obtained without the removal of said clamp. The friction-clamp 16, formed upon casing 7, also forms a lock for retaining the lever 5 in an adjusted position.

In constructing the muff a suitable covering is mounted upon the frame 3, and, if it is desired, the frame 3 may be constructed of a suitable flexible band which will readily conform to the shape of the ear and in addition to the band forming a frame for the cover of a muff, which may also be employed for retaining the hat upon the wearer.

From theforegoing description it will be apparent that the casings 7 and 7 have a pivotal movement upon clamp 11 and that the lever 5 is also slidably.mounted within said casings. By thisconstruction the muff may be adjusted to any desired position, whether in a horizontal or vertical plane, without the removalof the fastening device from the sweat-band, and if it is desired to obtain an independent adjustment of member 5 upon the fastening mechanism this can be obtained by means of employing a casing similar to that illustrated in Fig. 4 without the removal of clamping member 11 or other suitable fastening means which is secured to the casing from engagement with its supporting means, which is in this instance sweat-band 2.

While I have described in the foregoing description and depicted in the accompanying drawings the preferred form of the present invention, it will be obvious to one versed in the art to which this invention relates that certain alterations, modifications, and changes may be resorted to in the construction of devices in accordance with the present invenvention, and I therefore reserve the right to make such alterations, modifications, and changes as shall fairly fall within the spirit and scope of the present invention.

Having thus fully described my invention, what I claim as new, and desire to secure by Letters Patent, is

1. A device of the character described, comprising a casing, a cam member provided with fastening means mounted upon said casing, and muff-carrying means assembled with said casing and normally engaged by said cam member.

2. A device of the character described, comprising fastening means, a casing pivotally secured thereto, and muff-supporting means adjustably mounted Within said casing.

3. A device of the character described, comprising fastening means, an adjustable casing secured thereto, muff-carrying means adjustably mounted within said casing, and means for securing said muff-carrying means in an adjusted position.

4. In a device of the character described, the combination with a band of a hat, fastening means secured thereto, of a casing movably mounted upon said fastening means, resilient means provided with a muff removably mounted within said casing, and means for retaining said resilient means in an adjusted position.

5. In a device of the character described, the combination with a band of a hat, or the like, fastening means secured to said band, of a casing movably mounted upon said fastening means, a metallic member provided with a muff near one end removably mounted Within said casing, and locking means assembled with said casing for retaining said member in an adjusted position.

6. A device of the character described, comprising a casing provided with an opening extending throughout its length, movable fastening means secured thereto, a flexible lever provided with a muff removably mounted within said casing, and means carried by said casing and engaging one side of said lever for retaining the same in an adjusted position within said casing.

7. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing, fastening means movably mounted thereon, a muff provided with an extension mounted within said casing, and locking means carried by said casing for retaining said muff in an assembled position therewith.

8. In a device of the character described, the combination of an approximately rectangular casing, a cam member mounted upon said casing, fastening means secured to said cam member, and a lever provided with a muff mounted within said casing.

9. In a device of the character described, the combination of a casing having an aperture, said casing provided with a beveled surface contiguous to said apertured portion, a member having a cam-surface movably mounted within said apertured portion of the easing, fastening means secured to said member, and a muff removably assembled within said casing.
