To all whom it may concern:

Be it known that I, PAUL H. SUHLING, citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago, in the county of Cook and State of Illinois, .have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Mechanical Pictures; and I do hereby declare the following to be a full, clear, and exact description of the invention, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention has for its object to provide a mechanical picture and consists in the features of construction and combinations of parts hereinafter described and claimed. i y

In the accompanying drawings illustrating the invention: Figure -1- is a view in front elevation of a picture constructed in accordance with my invention. Fig. 2 is a vertical sectional view of the same on the line 22 of Fig. 1.

The invention is particularly applicable to picture post cards and the like bearing representations of various animals, and consists essentially in providing the representation of the animal with a mechanical tail which projects from the picture and is very elastic so that the same will move or swing easily upon imparting movement to the card or device bearing the picture.

In the instance illustrated the representation of a donkey is shown, this pictorial representation being minus the tail. Secured to the card A or otherdevice bearing the pictorial representation B at the point in the picture at which the tail of the donkey should be attached is a coiled spirohelical spring C which is tapered to a point at its free end. The said spring A is secured to the card, or the like, by passing an end coil of the spring through a perforation in the card as shown at D, and by then turning the spring in the manner of a screw said end coil E becomes disposed upon and bears against the under face of the card A or the like. The said end coil may then be relatively firmly secured against removal by disposing upon the under face of the card, or the like, and covering the end coil E of the spring by disposing a small strip F Specification of Letters Patent.

of gummed paper, or the like, which adheres to the card and the said end coil D of the spring.

By reason of the elasticity of the spring C constituting a substitute for the pictorial representation of the tail, the same will easily swing or wag, as will be obvious, and may be folded down to lie fiat upon the card so that the latter may be readily inserted in an ordinary envelop for purposes of mailmg.

The device is intended exclusively for amusement, as will be obvious.

I claim as my invention:

1. As a new article of manufacture, a card bearing the pictorial representation of an animal devoid of its tail, and an elastic spring secured to said card at one of its ends at the point of attachment of the tail of the animal pictured thereon and projecting from the pictorial face of the card.

2. As a new article of manufacture,

3. As a new article of manufacture, a card bearing the pictorial representation of an animal devoid of its tail, and an elastic helical spring secured to said card at one of its ends at the point of attachment of the tail of the animal pictured thereon, said spring tapered toward its free end portion.

4:. As a new article of manufacture, a card bearing the pictorial representation of an animal devoid of its tail, and having a perforation at the point in the picture at which the tail of the animal is attached to the body, a helical spring secured at one end in said perforation and tapered at its free end, and means engaging said spring with said card for preventing withdrawal thereof from said perforation.
