PIN-F AST ENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Dee. I9. 1911.
To all whom it may concern:
lie it. known that l. LEWIS (lr. Fnwels. a citizen of the United States, residing at Pasadena. California. have invented a new and useful Pin-Fastener, of which the following is a epeeilieation.
y invention relates to the construction of a simple and ell'eetive metallic garter.
'lhe ohjeet of the invention is to provide an inexpensive and durahle garter that will not loosen ar-eidentally-and one which will in no way interlere with the circulation in the leg and which will he eonit'ortahle in hot weather. My device also supports the sleeking on all sides instead of at one point only. The means hy which these henelieial results are attained are set forth in the following -speeilication and shown in the arroinpanying drawings. in which- Figure l is,a top plan view of one of my garters open read) for use; Fig. J is a side view of the same. garte' and illustrates the fastening ap 'iaratns; Fig. 3 is a 't'ragnu-ntal cross seetion on the dotted line ((-4! in Fig. 2. taken in the direction indicated by the arrow and l i". 4 is a view of a leg and shows a garter in use.
'lhroughont the several views like eharaeters refer to like parts.
Referring to the details oE eonstruetion: 1 is-a llexihle metallic hand preferably made round as shown; 2 is an eye or ring formed in the manner shown on one end of said hand I. This eye is heat outward away from the leg at a slight angle to permit the hand 1 to enter it in closing. From the eye 2 the guard wire 3 is carried hark to a point 4 where it encircles the wire 1 and terminates in the hook I). 7 refers to the leg of the users nndergarment and 8 refers to the stocking to be supported.
ln use the peculiar construction of the ring 2 forms a vital feature. This ring is made large enough to freely admit of the insertion of the wire or hand 1. at such an angle to the curvature of the hand and fastener that when the point (i is passed through the eye it. will he necessary to spring the point in toward the leg in order to engage it in the hook 5. This produees a binding action between the edges of the ring and the wire or band inserted in it l l l and when the point is tucked under the hook it is llllpnfisllllt' for it to slip out and allow the garter to loosen. It ran readily he een that il the are or ring were eonstrurltal at right angles to the eurre ol' the hand no ohe-lilt'lt' would he inter msed agaiml the loosening ol the garter and nith too slight an angle it would he dillirult or impossihle to pass the point through the ore. The exact angle i \aried slightly arrording to the size of the eye and the i/.e ol the wire hand. llul one eon-trueted a shunt] in the drawings will girtsatist'aelonr wrrire. The hook I; is heat inward tonar=l ilul -g nearly as l'ar as the guard it and the point U is held snug again-l the -aid guard 3.
ln use the garter iop ned. the point is passed through the hltlt'lillhlf and undergartnent'. then outside within a hll'H'l distant-e. it is made to eneirl'le the leg this is re peated MYtl'zll tiniest. ln Fig. l the dotted portion indieates plaees where the hand is Ht ltlt' the sock and u ulergarnlent. The point is then passed through the eye 2 and under the hook t' as ahove deserihed. ln this nnuuu-r the top ol the stoeking' and lunlergarnu-nt are pinned together at a number ot plat-es and the ninlergarnlent supports the slot-king. 'lhe garter ma he left. as loose as desired when the point is secured in the manner ahove set forth. The guard prereuts the point from injuring the wearer.
The garter may he made olf hrass. silver, teel or other su'itahle metal or if desired may he plated with gold or silver. Various lengths may he made and an shape'or size ol wire used for a hand.
llaving thus desrrihed my in\ entionqrhat l claim as new and desire to serure hy Letters latent is:
t. In a pin fastener: a eurved wire hand having one end pointed and having an eye l'ornu-d at the other end. aid are heing hent outward to allow the opposite end ol said hand to he passed througlrit a hook formed on said hand :ulapled to engage the pointed end of said nire; and a guard lit-tween the hook :nd eye adapted to prevent the point l'roln injuring lhe user.
L. In a pin fastener: a wire hand hent to form a ('ll'l'lt and having onoend pointed: a ring formed on the nppusllt' end ot said band and bent slightly outward from the circle and adapted to receive the pointed end of said wire; a shield formed on said band by continuing said wire from the ri to a. point on the band removed from sai rin where a hook is formed from the end of said wire; said hook adapted to engage and retain the pointed end of said wire, all as described.
