Be it known that I, ARTHUR J. EnaUER, a citizen of the United States, residing at St. Louis, Missouri, have invented a certain new and useful Improvement in Leggings, of which the following is a full, clear, and exact description, such as will enable others skilled in the art to which it appertains to make and use the same.

This invention relates to leggings, and particularly to leggings of the type which comprise a strap or member that is wrapped around the legging to hold it in place.

One object of my invention is to provide a legging of the type referred to in which the means th at holds the body of the legging in place is so designed that it can move or adjust itself to the muscles of the leg and thus prevent the legging from binding or pressing too tightly on the leg when the muscles expand and contract.

Another object is to provide a legging of the type referred to which is so designed that the Body of the legging can expand and contract without causing the overlapping portions of same to get out of alinement or work up or down.

Another object is to provide a legging in which the means that is wrapped around the body part to holdfit in place consists of a loop connected at its opposite ends to one edge portion of the legging adjacent the top and bottom thereof, and a separate piece adapted to extend around the legging and provided with an eye through which said loop passes freely, thereby permitting said loop and piece to move relatively to each other when the muscles of the leg expand and contract and thus preventing the legging from binding. And still another object is to provide a legging of the type referred to that can be manufactured cheaply and which will not stretch or pull out of shape.

Other objects and desirable features of my invent-ion will be hereinafter pointed out.

Figure l is a front elevational view of a legging constructed in accordance with my invention, showing the legging partly open; Fig. 2 is a similar view showing the legging closed; Fig. 3 is a rear elevational view; and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectional View taken on the line 4-4 of Fig. 2.

Referring to the drawings which illustrate the preferred form of my invention, A

designates the body part of the legging which is adapted to be wrapped around the leg of the user with the edge portion l lapping over the edge portion 2, said body part being formed from any suitable material, such, for example, as leather orcanvas.

The body part is retained in position by means of a device that consists of two parts which can rnove relatively to each other, namely, a loop 3 whose opposite ends are connected to the overlapping portion l of the body adjacent the top and bottom of the legging, and a member 4 provided at one end with an eye 5 through which the intermediate portion of the loop 3 passes freely, as shown in Fig. 3, said member 4 being adapted to be wrapped around the legging and secured to a device 6 which is fastened to the body part of the legging adjacent the edge portion 2' which projects under the overlapping portion 1 to which the loop is secured. I prefer to form the loop 3 from a leather strap or a straight piece of leather and roll the intermediate portion thereof so as to form a round part 3au that will slide freely through the eye 5 on the member 4, the member `4 valso consisting of a leather strap that is doubled at one end and stitched together so as to form the eye 5.

Any suitable device can be used for detachably connecting the free end of the member 4 to the body of the legging such as, for example, a buckle 6 which is fastened to the body of the legging by means of a horizontally disposed strip of material 7 that is stitched to the body of the legging adjacent the middle thereof, as shown in Fig. l.

The overlapping portionsof the legging are prevented from moving out of alinement or working upwardly or downwardly by means of a pin or stop 8 on the edge portion 2 that projects outwardly through a horizontally disposed slot 9 formed in a metal plate 10 that is fastened to the edge portieri l of the legging. This pin or stop 8 is swiveled in the strap 7 that secures the buckle to the legging, and an eye Sais mounted on the outer end of said stop so as to form a guide for the member 4, as shown in Fig. 2. The horizontally disposed slot 9 in the Vplate 10 is long enough to receive said eye 8a and after said eye has been passed throughl said slot the pin or stop 8 is given a half turn so as to arrange the eye 8a at right angles to the slot 9 and thus prevent the overlapping CIl part l from moving outwardly or away from the edge portion 2 of the legging. Thilo the eye 8 prevents the overlapping part l of the legging from springing outwardly, still said eye does not prevent the legging from expanding and contracting because the means which holds the overlapping portions of the legging in alinement consists of the pin or stop 8 that projects into the horizontally disposed slot 9. A legging constructed in this manner will not bind or press too tightly on the leg of the person wearing same because the loop 3 can shift or move relatively to the member 4, and the overlapping portions of the body part A of the legging can slide or move laterally relatively to each other. F or example, if the muscles in the calf of the leg expand the upper part of the legging will expand and this movement of the upper part of the legging causes the loop 8 to give or slide upwardly through the eye on the member 4, as shown in broken lines in Fig. 3. Likewise, if the lower part of the legging expands the loop 3 will move downwardly through the eye on the member 4 and thus prevent said loop and member from binding or pressing too tightly on the leg.

Another desirable feature of such a leg ging is that it will snugly fit either a large or a small ankle. Still another desirable feature is that the user can adjust the loop 8 on the member 4 in such a position that the legging is perfectly comfortable. The legging can be manufactured cheaply because the means which extends around the body part so as to hold it in place consists of two straps or straight pieces of leather; and still another' desirable feature that results from forming the retaining means in this manner is that said means is not apt to pull out of shape or stretch because it is formed from two straight pieces or strips of leather in which the grain runs lengthwise.

Having thus described my invention, what claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is:

l. A legging comprising a body part and retaining means for same consisting of a loop connected at its opposite ends to one of the edges of said body part adjacent the top and bottom of the legging, a separate member connected to said loop in such a manner that said loop and member can move relatively to each other, and a device located at approximately the middle of the legging to which said member can be conw nected.

2. A legging comprising a body part, a retaining means for said body part consisting of a long loop connected at its opposite ends to one edge of said body part adjacentthe top and bottom of the legging, and a separate member adapted to be wrapped around the middle part of the legging and provided with an eye through which said loop passes freely. 3. A legging comprising a body part adapted to be wrapped around the leg with one of its edge portions lapping over its other edge portion, a comparatively long loop connected to the overlapping edge portion of said body part adjacent the top and bottom of the legging, a separate member adapted to be wrapped around the middle part of the legging and connected to said loop in such a manner that said loop and member can move relatively to each other, and means located at approximately the middle of the legging for securing the free end of said member.

4. A legging comprising a body part adapted to be wrapped around the leg with one of its edge portions lapping over its other edge portion, a loop connected to the overlapping edge portion of said body part adjacent the top and bottom of the legging, a separate member adapted to be wrapped around the middle part of the legging and connected to said loop in such a manner 'that said loop and member' can move relatively to each other, means for securing the free end of said member to the middle part of the legging, and means for preventing the overlapping portions of said body part from working up or down.

5. A legging comprising a body partadapted to be wrapped around the leg with one of its edge portions lapping over its other edge portion, a loop connected to the overlapping edge portion of said body part adjacentthe top and bottom of the legging and being so proportioned that it will extend only part way around the legging, a separate member adapted to be wrapped around the middle part of the legging and connected to said loop in such a manner that said loop and member can move relatively to each other, means for securing the free end of said member to approximately the middle portion of the legging, means for preventing the overlapping portions of said body part from working up or down, and an adjustable device that prevents the overlapping portions of said body part from separating.

6. A legging comprising a body part that is adapted to be wrapped around the leg with one edge portion of same lapping over its other edge portion, one of said edge portions being provided with a slotthat extends approximately parallel to the top and bottom edges of the legging, a stop or pin on the other edge portion that projects into said slot, a loop connected at its opposite ends to the overlapping portion of said body part, a member having an eye through which said loop passes freely, and means for securing the free end of said member to the body part of the legging adjacent the middle thereof so as to cause said member to hold the overlapping portion of said body part in position.

7. A legging comprising a body part that is adapted to be wrapped around the leg with one edge portion of same lapping over the other edge portion, the outer edge portion having a horizontally disposed slot formed therein, a swiveled pin or stop on the under edge portion that projects through said slot, an eye on the outer end of said pin, a loop connected to the outer edge portion adjacent the upper and lower ends thereof, and a member connected to said loop in such a manner that the loop can move relatively thereto, and means for securing the free end of said member, the eye on said swiveled pin being utilized as a guide for said member.

8. A legging comprising a body part adapted to be wrapped around the leg with one of its edge portions lapping over its other edge portion, a leather strap connected at its opposite ends to the outer edge portion of said body part so as to form a loop, the intermediate portion of said loop or strap being substantially round in cross section, a member provided with an eye through which the round portion of said loop passes freely, a swiveled pin or stop on the underneath port-ion of said body part that projects outwardly through a horizontally disposed slot in the overlapping portion of said body part, a guide on said stop for the member that is connected to said loop, and means for securing the free end of said member to the body part of the legging.
