Be it known that I, GRACE PFEIL, a citizen of the United States, residing at Chicago,

inthe county of ICook and State of Illinois, have invented certain new and useful Improvements in Corsets, of which the`follow- 1n is a specification.

ith the ordinary corset, as is well known to those skilled in the art, there is ordinarily an open space betweenl the margins that is bridged merely by the lacings, and into this space the adjacentortion of the wearer protrudes. It has een-proposed in the prior art to cover this space with a shield that extends behind the lacings, the shield being attached at one edge to one margin of the corset, and having its other e ge free. This has proven objectionable, in thatit is diflicult to properly position the shield; the same becomes wrinkled and misplaced, so that it does not properly perform the desired function, and furthermore becomes uncomfortablev to the wearer.

`The present invention is an improvement upon this prior art, and the object is to provide a shield, so mounted on the corset that it will at all times bridge the other- Wise open space; will be comfortable to the wearer, and at the samev time, will not interfere with the ready connection and disconnection of the margins of the corset.

In the embodiment disclosed, the corset, in so far as the general structure is concerned, is well known, comprising a body that opens at the front, having a margin 1 provided with' 'eyelets 2 and a coacting opposite margin 3provided with eyes 4. A strip 5,

detachably coacting with the margin 3, has studs' that detaehably interlock in the eyes V4:. vThis-.strip 5 furthermore has eyelets 7,

As already explained, the corset, as thus far described, is oplen to the objection that in Fig. f1. The central portion of this shield,

directly in rear of the lacing, is preferably reinforced with vertically arranged stays 12. With this construction, it will be evident that the space between the margin 1 and the strip 5 can bevaried, as des1red,.or as 70 found necessary, and this s ace will at all times bebridged by the shie d. The flexible' sections 10 and 11 permit the ready adjustment of the lacing. At the'same time, the shield will at all times be tioned, because of its connection with the margin 1 andthe strip 5, and will likewise remain in smooth and comfortable condition on the wearer. In addition, it is to be noted i that the shield, being secured to the strip 5, 804

does not in any manner interfere with the openingand closing of the corset, as said strip 5 can be connected to and disconnected from the margin 3, without in any manner displacing the lacing or shield.

From the foregoing, it is thought that the construction, operation and many advantages of the herein described invention will be apparent to those skilledin the artand it will be understood that various changes in the size, shape, proportlon, and -minor details of construction, may be' resorted t0 without departing from the spirit or scope of the invention.
