CARL R. LINDENBERG, OF COLUMBUS, OHIO, ASSIGNOR TO THE M. C. LIIi COMPANY, A CORPORATION OF OHIO.
LEGGING.
ATENT onnion.
Application filed February 1, 1918. Serial No. 214,800.
To all whom it'may concern:
Be it known that I, CARL R. LINDENBERG,
a citizen of the United States, residing at Columbus, in the county of Franklin and.
With these and other objects in view, the
invention accordingly consists in the novel features of construction, combination of elements and arrangement of parts hereinafter fully described and having the scope thereof defined by the claims hereunto appended.
In the drawing, wherein'has been shown the preferred embodiment of the invention:
Figure l is a front elevation of a legging constructed in accordance with the principles of the invention.
Fig.2 is a vertical sectional view taken along the'line 22 of Fig. 1.
Fig. 3 is a detailed perspective view of the metallic member employed for stiffening the legging and Fig. 4 is a horizontal sectionalview taken through the legging and disclosing the latter in a buckled position.
Similar characters of reference denote corresponding parts throughout the several views of the drawing.
Referring more particularly to the drawing, the legging 1 comprising the present invention is preferably formed from leather, although it will be understood that any other desirable material may be employed in lieu of the material described. In this instance the body of the legging is formed of superposed sections so as to provide a body portion of suitable thickness and durability, and said superposed sections are retained in position by stitching the marginal edges of the legging as indicated by the numeral 2.
In order to provide an improved method of stiffening the front edge 3 of the legging so as to prevent the latter when buckled from assuming a wrinkled or bulging condition, use is made ofa metallic stifiening member 4. The latter is situated within the superposed parts or sections of the legging at a position adjacent to the edge 3 and is formed to provide a vertically extending shank portion 5, which portion is secured in position through the medium of rivets 6, passing through the sections of the legging and through openings 7 formed in the shank 5. This construction provides a substantial and effective method of retaining the member 4 in its operative position within said legging.
The lower extremity of the shank?) terminates in a tongue portion 8, which latter is extended beyond the rear face of that portion of the legging adjacent to the edge 3, and is adapted to engage with a socket element 9 ,carried by the opposite edge portion 10 of the legging 1. Thus in order to secure the lower portion of the legging about the limb of the wearer, the edge portion 3 is pulled so as to overlap the adjacent portion 10, and this will permit the tongue 8 to enter the socket 9, whereby a'convenient and posi- Lnv "ta I PatentedNov. 12,1918. 7
tire method is provided for retaining the I to the portion 10, and overlaps the base 1a" of the staple so as to maintain the latter in a relatively rigid position. It will be seen that by passing the staple 12 through either of the openings 11, that the sections or portions 3 and 10 of the legging will be drawn into overlapped relation, and this condition is maintained through the {position of a strap 15 which is secured to the portion 3 and is adapted to be passed through the eye portion of the staple 12 which protrudes beyond the openings 11, thus providing a simple and effective method of quickly and conveniently securing the upper overlapping portions of the legging. The end of the strap 15 is passed through a loop 16, carried by the strip 13, and is thus retained in a secured position. The plurality of openings or slots 11 are provided in order that relative adjustments of the portions 3 and 10 maybe effected, so that the legging may be adapted to different persons.
Hitherto considerable difiiculty has been encountered in preventing that portion of the edge 3 which is located adjacent to the slots 11 from bulging or buckling, and in order to provide means whereby this objectionable feature will be'obviated, the stiffening member 4 has the shank 5 thereof extended at its upper end to produce a widened, substantially rectangular portion 17, which portion is provided with a squared opening 18. The latter is so located that it will aline with the slots 11, so as to permit of the in sertion of the staple 12 therethrough. However, due to the rectangular formation of the portion 19, the latter will surround said slots and will effectively prevent that por tion of the legging adjacent thereto from bending or wrinkling, as will be clearly understood.
From the foregoing it will be seen that there is provided improved means for connecting the overlapping portions of the legging and through the application of the stiffening member 4, the outer edge 3 of the legging will constantly be maintained in a neat, presentable and trim condition by eliminating the bending or flexing of the legging parts adjacent thereto.
Having described the invention, what is claimed is:
1. A legging comprising a body portion terminating in overlapping securing edges, means for securing the upper portions of said edges in fastened relation, including a staple member fixed to the under edge of said legging, said staple member being adapted to pass through any one of a plurality of slots formed in the outer edge, a strap carried by said outer edge and adapted to be inserted through that portion of the staple which protrudes beyond said slots, and a stiffening member vertically positioned within said outer edge and "having a portion thereof situated to surround the slots formed in said outer edge.
2. A legging comprising a body portion formed to terminate at thefront thereof in overlapping wider and outer edge portions, means for securing the upper parts of said overlapping edge portions in fastened relation, consisting of a staple member carried by said under edge portion, said staple memher being adapted to pass through a slot formed in the outer edge portion, a strap adapted to be inserted through said staple when the latter is positioned within said slot, a metallic stifl'ening member vertically positioned within said legging and formed to lie parallel with said outer edge portion, said stiflening member terminating at its upper end in a relatively widened portion in which is formed an opening, the latter open ing being arranged in alinement with the slot formed in said outer edge portion, and a tongue formed upon the lower end of-said stiffening member for engagement with a socket elementcarried by the lower extremity of said under edge portion, whereby the lower parts of said legging may be secured together.
In testimony whereof I affix my signature.
CARL n. LINDENBERG.
