Description
H. M. MCCORMICK. CORSET STAY STIPFENER. APPLIUATION FILED DEC. 4, 1908.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
entrain snares PATENT ornron.
HUGH M. MCCORMICK, OF DETROIT, MICHIGAN, ASSIGNOR- TO AMERICAN GORET STAY COMPANY, OF PHOENIX, ARIZONA TERRITORY.
CORSET-STAY STIFFENER.
Specification of Letters Patent.
Patented Aug. 3, 1909.
Application filed December 4, 1998. Serial No. 466,083.
' ers, of which the following is a specification.
My invention relates to a detail improvement in corset stay described in application for patent on corset stay, Serial No. 454,859,
filed September twenty-sixth, nineteen hon-- dred and eight, and the object of my improvement is: to increase the length of the rigid lower side of my above mentioned corset stay thereby increasing its effectiveness in fitting and supporting the lower abdomen.
I accomplish these objects by means of either stiffener illustrated in the accompanying drawing, in which:
Figure 1 illustrates a detached corset stay provided with stiffener A. Fig. 2 illus trates a detached'corset stay provided with stiffener L'. Fig. 3 illustrates the corset stay combined with a corset provided with stiffener VA in position on the person. Fig. 4 illustrates the corset stay combined with a corset provided with stiffener L in position on the person. I
Similar letters refer to similar parts throughout the four illustrations.
The corset stay is a true lever with fulcrum in side and back of corset, its leverage supporting the pelvic-abdominal region, the obect thereof being to exert a specialupward and inward pressure upon the lower abdomen independently of any effect. of the corset proper; and the stifiener A or L increases and defines the independent activity of the leverage of the corset stay by retaining it lower upon the abdomen and closer to the thigh than an unstifi'ened stay can be made 7 to lie. The used the stiffener also permits more latitude of direction, that is, thecorset stay may be either narrower near the waistline and comparatively high, as shown in Fig. 1, or may be low across the hip, as shown in Fig. 2, in either case performing its specific function, that of holding the abdominal viscera situate in and near the pelvis up and back, and there sustaining it, independ- 'ently, while allowing the corset to perform its natural function, that of producing a desired figure.
The stiffener A is provided with broad ends, B and B which add breadth to the pressure of the stiffener upon the abdomen. The broad ends also make the stiffener less liable to tear the fabric of the stay than if narrow, and in the case of the end B the lug 2 exerts a tendency to keep the upper edge of the corset stay from wrinkling. The lower side of the stiifener 3 maintains a perfect unwrinkled corset stay bottom. The use of the stiffener A or L also tends to keep the corset stay from slipping up on the abdomen under tension.
The stiffener A is preferably inclosed between two or more strips of cloth or other flexible material, and, as shown in the drawing, has no attachment to the corset, but is confined entirely to the supporting end of the corset stay. The stiffener is made of steel or other hard material.
The stifiener L- on the contrary has its rear extremity 4 riveted or otherwise attached in any desirable osition at or near the side of the corset an by reason of this attachment gives a more rigid bottom line to 'the corset stay, allowing it, however, suffi- Like cient flexibility to perform its office. the stiffener A, the stiffener L is preferably inclosed by strips of cloth, elastic webhing, or any suitable material.
As shown in and described in the application heretofore mentioned the stiffener "A or L is e elctcd forlacing and there is no change in t 1is respect.
Having thus described my invention, what I claim as new and desire to secure by Letters Patent is 1. The combination with a corset stay having an a proximately vertical front edge and a curver lower edge, of a stiffener therea portion thereof extending along and following the contour of said front edge of the corset-stay and a curved portion disposed along,
and following the contour of said curved lower edge of the corset-Sta 2'. The combination with a corset stay having an approximately vertical front edge,
an upper edge, and e curved lower edge, of a said stiffener tei'minatin at the end thereof stili'ener therefor, comprising a strip of thin opposite the extremity ogsuid curved portion material having it portion thereof extending of the stifl'e'ner, in a reerwardmxtendmg lug 1o along and following the contour of said front Y HUGH M. MGCORMICK. 5 edge of the corset-stay, and a curved portion Witnesses: v
disposed along and followin r the contour of J. W. STRINGER, the curved lower edge of tlio corset stay, CARRIE G. STRINGER.
